How much should an Indian couple budget for Penang? Hotels, transport and activities

Penang is the budget-friendliest beach-culture holiday an Indian couple can take: hawker plates at RM6-12, good George Town rooms at RM150-300, and most sights free or under RM30. The full 4-day math, in ringgit and rupees.

The headline: Penang is kind to wallets

Penang might be the best value international holiday an Indian couple can book: flights are short and often direct from Chennai, hawker food is world-famous and costs RM6-12 a plate, good George Town rooms run RM150-300 a night, and the island's best experiences - George Town's streets, the clan jetties, Kek Lok Si's halls - are free. At roughly RM1 = ₹18, here is where the money actually goes over four days.

Hotels: RM150-300 buys well

George Town's guesthouses and mid-range hotels start around RM150 a night for a clean, central double; RM250-450 lands a charming heritage boutique in a restored shophouse; true luxury (Seven Terraces, Cheong Fatt Tze's Blue Mansion) runs well above that. Stay in the heritage core or Gurney Drive and you will barely need transport. Four nights mid-range: roughly RM800-1,200 (₹15,000-22,000) - the biggest line in the budget and still gentle.

Food: the cheapest great eating in Asia

A 2026 price survey of 20 iconic Penang dishes put the typical plate at about RM6, with 90% under RM10 - char kway teow, asam laksa, Hokkien mee, nasi kandar. Hawker centres charge per stall, RM6-12 a plate; add teh tarik or kopi at RM2-4. A couple eating gloriously twice a day at hawkers, plus one cafe breakfast and one seafood dinner, spends about RM80-150 a day (₹1,500-2,700). Little India covers the vegetarian half of any couple for similar money.

Transport: small numbers

Grab hops within George Town run about RM10-20; the airport transfer is RM25-40 once each way; the heritage core is walkable. Budget RM100-150 (₹1,800-2,700) for a 4-day trip's worth of rides, less if you like walking, more if you day-trip to Batu Ferringhi (RM30-45 each way). The free CAT bus loops the heritage zone.

Activities: mostly free, one RM30 splurge

  • George Town heritage streets, street art, clan jetties: free.
  • Kek Lok Si Temple: free entry (the pagoda and inclined lift carry small fees of a few ringgit).
  • Penang Hill funicular: around RM30 return per foreign adult - the trip's one real ticket.
  • Entopia butterfly farm or ESCAPE park if you want a paid half-day: the priciest items on the island, roughly RM70-170 per adult - optional.

A couple doing the hill, the temple and one paid attraction: about RM200-400 total (₹3,600-7,200).

The 4-day totals (excluding flights)

  • Lean and happy (guesthouse, hawkers, CAT bus + Grab): about RM1,300-1,800 per couple (₹24,000-33,000).
  • Comfortable mid-range (heritage hotel, cafes + hawkers, Grab everywhere): about RM2,300-3,200 (₹42,000-58,000).
  • Full comfort (boutique luxury, seafood dinners, paid attractions): RM4,500 and up (₹82,000+).

Add flights - Chennai-Penang direct returns often price around ₹23,000-29,000 per person - and a comfortable 4-day Penang holiday for two lands near ₹85,000-1,15,000 all-in. Few international trips this rich come in this low.

Money tips for Indians

  • Carry a zero-forex or low-forex card; Grab and most hotels take cards, hawkers want cash.
  • Withdraw ringgit at bank ATMs in George Town (Maybank, CIMB), not at the airport counter if you can wait.
  • Book Penang Hill tickets online to skip the counter line.
  • The only real budget trap is Batu Ferringhi's resort strip, where food and drink price like a different country.
