Illustration: a fictional family asks about changing lines in a generic metro concourse. This is not Esplanade, a verified sign photograph, route map or gate layout.
For a Howrah Maidan journey continuing on Kolkata's Blue Line, treat Esplanade as an interchange, not an instruction to leave through any exit. Identify the onward Blue Line station and ask for the current interchange passage before crossing a fare gate. A line colour, a street exit and a ticket-validity boundary are different things.
What the official sources establish
Metro Railway's Green Line page, marked reviewed 11 September 2026, identifies Howrah Maidan under East-West/Green Line. The Ministry of Railways release of 4 May 2024 identifies old and new Esplanade as the meeting point of Blue and Green and describes their interconnecting passage.
That release says Blue footprints led passengers from the new Green Line Esplanade side toward old Blue Line Esplanade, and Green footprints served the reverse direction. This is a useful dated description, not proof that every marking, diversion or gate is unchanged today. Follow current destination signs and ask staff if markings are missing or contradictory.
Do not transfer the colour of the train you arrived on into the direction you need next. If you are changing from Green to Blue, the question is the route toward Blue Line, then the correct direction for your destination. A Blue Line sign alone does not identify the right train direction.
Stop before the gate if the sign says exit
At Esplanade, distinguish a street exit from the interconnecting route and from a fare-control gate. Do not follow an exit simply because it points toward a familiar landmark or seems closest. Show staff your exact onward station and ticket before passing a barrier if the route is unclear.
A PIB release posted 2 May 2024 describes a new Blue-to-Green entry gate in the subway and a separate Green-to-Blue movement arrangement. Its body says “Kolkata, April 2, 2024”, which differs from the posting date. We retain that discrepancy rather than assign a confirmed opening date. It demonstrates that corridor movement arrangements have changed; it is not a current turn-by-turn instruction or a present gate number.
Check the ticket before starting the first leg
The 12 March 2024 integrated-ticket release described counter-issued integrated tickets for switching among Green, Blue and Orange through their interchange stations. It separately limited the mobile/paper QR described then to the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Green stretch. Those are historical product conditions, not a promise that a Green-only QR now covers your Blue Line continuation.
The operator's enquiry page, marked reviewed 25 May 2026, still says composite interline tickets are counter-only and describes Green QR applicability using the old split-section wording. That is a reason to ask for current ticket-specific confirmation, not to assume the whole page resolves today's network and every purchase channel.
Before buying at Howrah Maidan, state the final Blue Line station, passenger count and travel needs. Ask which ticket covers both legs, where it must be bought and how it is validated during the change. Keep the ticket until you have finished the journey. This guide does not establish today's fare, universal ticket count, re-entry rule, refund or penalty.
A line-change handover worksheet
This original worksheet is not a floorplan. It deliberately supplies no unverified arrows, platform numbers or sign photos.
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Starting point | Howrah Maidan Metro, not a similarly named mainline station or road landmark. |
| Change | Esplanade interchange toward Blue Line, not an assumed street exit. |
| Final destination | Exact Blue Line station and current train direction that serves it. |
| Ticket boundary | Coverage for both legs and what to do at each actual gate. |
| Accessible path | Every level change, required lift, walking section and current availability. |
| If signs disagree | Pause clear of the queue and ask staff before crossing; note the current instruction. |
Suggested question: "We came from Howrah Maidan and need [exact Blue Line station]. Which current interchange passage should we follow? Does this ticket cover the onward leg, and what do we do at this gate? We need [lift/walking help]."
With parents, verify the whole change
A connecting passage does not prove a continuous step-free route. Ask about the full platform-to-platform path and whether every required lift is available. Do not infer walking distance, transfer time or lift status from a schematic map or old launch photograph.
Keep the family together while one person asks for directions. If someone has already crossed a gate, explain who is inside and outside and ask staff how to regroup safely. Do not pass a used ticket back or follow another passenger through a closing barrier. If a mistake has been made, ask for the actual ticket-correction process rather than assuming a free reversal.
Reviewed 6 November 2026. Public primary pages and dated releases only; no journey, current sign survey, gate trial or accessible-route test was performed. Exact current gate sequence, paid-area continuity, lift chain and walking measurement remain unconfirmed here. No map with verified route arrows or on-site photos is supplied.
