A boarding-pass stamp and a passport immigration stamp are different things. India's reported removal of the first does not mean every traveller will receive the second. FTI-TTP eGate users are an important exception.
What changed for boarding passes
Hindustan Times reported on 1 September 2026 that the Bureau of Immigration had ended mandatory physical boarding passes and boarding-pass stamping at immigration counters at all international airports in India. Its report quotes the memo: passengers may present e-boarding passes, while physical passes remain accepted but are not stamped. The report describes the change as applying to international departures.
This is about the immigration counter, not a promise that every airline, document check or airport step can be completed with a phone alone. Follow the instructions for your actual flight and keep the required passport and travel documents ready.
A passport stamp is not guaranteed
The official FTI-TTP FAQ says: "Passengers using the FTI-TTP eGates shall not be given any immigration stamps." It describes eGates at both arrivals and departures. Do not read the boarding-pass change as a guarantee of an exit stamp in your passport.
The programme is for eligible, registered Indian nationals and OCI cardholders after the required checks and biometric enrolment. A DigiYatra registration does not itself allow use of FTI-TTP eGates. The same official FAQ says a separate FTI-TTP registration is needed. Registration or eligibility alone is not a promise that a particular eGate will be available for your journey.
If you need a record of travel
The FTI-TTP portal says users can access travel details through their login. For official travel records, it directs travellers to apply for the "Travel Data History" service on the e-FRRO portal after registration and login.
Ask the authority or organisation requesting proof which records it accepts. Keep airline records too, but do not present a booking alone as proof that travel was completed. This article does not decide which evidence meets a tax, visa or employer's requirements.
Why the boarding-pass step was removed
The 1 September Hindustan Times report says the memo identified inconvenience and reading errors from faint or poorly inked stamps. That explains the reported reason for removing the step. It does not establish a guaranteed queue time or a measured speed improvement for your airport.
Before you travel
- Keep the boarding pass accessible in the format your airline and journey require. At immigration, the reported policy accepts digital and paper passes without stamping the boarding pass.
- Keep your passport and required documents ready. Removing a stamp does not remove immigration clearance or establish visa or entry eligibility.
- If using FTI-TTP, follow its separate registration and biometric requirements. Do not expect an immigration stamp from the eGate.
- If travel proof matters, check the receiving organisation's requirements before relying on a passport stamp that may not exist.
