The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement came into force on 20 October 2026, and tucked inside it is something travellers will love: a working holiday scheme that will let up to 1,000 Indians aged 18 to 30 live, work and travel in New Zealand for up to 12 months.
Immigration New Zealand published the full visa details on 20 October. Here is what changes right away, what is coming later, and why New Zealand belongs on your list either way.
What changes right now
- Two new work visas are live from 20 October 2026. The Temporary Employment Entry visas cover highly skilled roles on New Zealand's Green List, plus a small number of professions considered iconic to India. Up to 5,000 people can hold them at any one time, each visa is valid for 3 years, and you need a job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer. These visas do not lead to residence.
- Longer post-study work rights from 16 November 2026. Indians who complete a PhD in New Zealand will be eligible for post-study work visas of up to 4 years, up from 3.
- Student work hours are protected. International students in New Zealand can currently work up to 25 hours a week while studying. If that setting ever changes, the agreement commits to at least 20 hours a week for Indian students.
The big one: a working holiday scheme for 18 to 30 year olds
The headline for travellers is the new working holiday scheme. Within 2 years of the deal taking effect, New Zealand will open 1,000 places a year for Indians aged 18 to 30. Each place lets you stay up to 12 months.
If you have never come across a working holiday visa, the idea is simple. You live in a country for months, travel slowly, and legally take short term jobs along the way to fund it. Think picking fruit in an orchard, working a cafe season in Queenstown, or helping out at a ski town, with weekends spent on trails and lakes. New Zealand has run schemes like this with dozens of countries for years. For young Indians, this door has never been open before.
One honest caveat: 1,000 places a year is not many, so expect competition when applications open. The launch date and process are still to be announced, and we will update you when they are.

Why New Zealand is worth the wait
Milford Sound's cliffs and waterfalls, Queenstown's adventure sports, the Hobbiton movie set, glaciers you can walk on, and lakes so blue they look edited. New Zealand packs an unfair amount into two small islands. The best months to visit are November to March, their summer, which lines up nicely with India's winter holidays. And with this deal in the news, expect more flights and holidays aimed at Indians over the next couple of years.
