Rules in detail
Indians need a Visitor Visa before travel
India is not on New Zealand's visa-waiver list, so Indian passport holders cannot use the NZeTA. A Visitor Visa must be approved before you fly. Immigration New Zealand also advises against booking non-refundable travel until the visa is approved.
What the Visitor Visa allows
The Visitor Visa covers holidays, visiting family and friends, and study of up to three months. You cannot work in New Zealand on it, though remote work for an overseas business is allowed. Stays of up to six or nine months are possible depending on the visa granted. Partners and dependent children under twenty can be included in one application when travelling together for the same duration.
Cost and timing
Immigration New Zealand lists the Visitor Visa cost from NZD $441, with 80% of applications processed within two weeks; its weekly-updated wait-time page currently shows a one-week average for visitor visas. Treat these as planning figures, not promises, and apply well before peak summer travel. The separate NZeTA wait times do not apply to Indians, because Indians need the visa itself.
How to apply from India
The recommended route is the online application service at apply.immigration.govt.nz, which needs a RealMe account, scans of documents and a card for payment. Applications can also be lodged at New Zealand Visa Application Centres in India through VFS. The official India checklist (INZ 11223) walks through exactly what to include.
Documents: what the India checklist asks for
The checklist calls for the completed application form, two recent passport photographs per person, passport identity-page copies, and proof you can fund the stay and outward travel - bank statements or payslips for three months, income tax returns for two years, credit card statements, or a completed sponsorship form from an acceptable sponsor in New Zealand.
It also asks for evidence of home-country circumstances showing you will return: employment or business evidence, assets, family ties, or a retirement certificate and pension evidence for retired travellers. Relationship documents are needed for a partner or children on the application, and a consent letter from the non-travelling parent when a child travels with one parent. Documents not in English must be translated by an acceptable translator, not by a family member or friend.
Passport validity and health
Your passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand, and airlines may refuse check-in if a passport is close to expiring. Stays over six months may need a chest x-ray and over twelve months a medical certificate; police certificates apply to long cumulative stays. These thresholds rarely affect a short family holiday but check them for longer visits.
On arrival
Carry evidence of your plans, funds and onward travel even with an approved visa. Travellers complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration and apply for entry permission at the border; biosecurity rules are strict about food and outdoor equipment, so declare honestly.
Planning for parents
Apply early with complete documents - INZ processes complete applications fastest. Retired parents should include pension or retirement evidence rather than employment letters. Keep bookings refundable until visas are approved, carry insurance that covers medical care abroad, and allow comfortable pacing for long flights and drives.
For senior travellers
Apply early with complete documents; Immigration New Zealand processes complete applications fastest. Retired parents should show pension or retirement evidence instead of employment letters. Keep travel bookings refundable until the visa is approved. Carry insurance covering medical care abroad, and plan rest days around the long flights.
