the short answer

Yes, Indians with an ordinary passport need a visa for Turkey. If you hold a valid Schengen, USA, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit, you can get a single-entry e-Visa valid for one month on evisa.gov.tr, provided you meet the other conditions. Without one of those, apply to a Turkish embassy or consulate.

Rules in detail

Do Indians need a visa for Turkey?

Yes. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says ordinary, special and service passport holders from India need a visa to enter Türkiye. Only diplomatic passport holders are exempt, for up to 90 days.

The e-Visa route

Indian ordinary passport holders with a valid Schengen member, USA, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit can get a single-entry e-Visa, valid for one month, on the official site evisa.gov.tr. The ministry adds that you must meet certain conditions, which the site lists when you apply.

  • The e-Visa is for tourism or commerce only. For work or study, visas come from Turkish embassies or consulates.
  • Fees for e-Visas on the official site are lower than fees at the airport. The current fee is shown on the site when you apply.

If you do not hold one of those visas

Then the e-Visa is not the route for you. Apply for a visa at the nearest Turkish diplomatic or consular mission before you travel.

Before you apply

  • Check that your Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa is valid on your travel dates.
  • Use only evisa.gov.tr, and check the address before entering passport details.
  • Print the e-Visa and carry it with the passport.

FAQs

Is there visa on arrival for Indians in Turkey? No. Indians need a visa in advance.

How long is the e-Visa valid? One month, single entry.

Can I get the e-Visa without a Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa? The ministry lists those documents as the condition for Indians, so otherwise apply at a Turkish mission.

Where do I apply? evisa.gov.tr is the official e-Visa site.

For senior travellers

Check that each parent's Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa is still valid on the dates of travel, because the e-Visa depends on it. Apply well before the flight and keep a printout of the e-Visa. Use only the official site, not agent sites that add fees. Turkey's airports and sightseeing involve a lot of walking, so ask the airline about wheelchair assistance when booking.
