Best time to visit Turkey with parents

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 23 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 23 Oct 2026
The short answer

For a first Turkey trip with parents, our pick is May or September for an Istanbul-led route. April and October can also work, with layers and rain protection. Do not apply an Istanbul recommendation to every coast or highland stop. Antalya is hotter in summer, and a comfortable city holiday need not include a long string of hotel changes. Our choice is based on official city statistics, not a forecast or a promise about crowds.

Istanbul city statistics show mean daily maximum temperatures rising from 9.6°C in January to 29.7°C in July and August, with mean monthly rainfall from 88.8 mm in January to 22.1 mm in July. Antalya is a different climate: January mean daily maximum is 15.0°C, July 34.2°C, and rainfall is concentrated much more heavily in winter. The displayed measurement periods are 1950-2025 for Istanbul and 1930-2025 for Antalya. These are long city series, not matching 1991-2020 station normals.

Who it suits

For Parents / seniors

Fewer hotel changes, a rest block after a transfer and a seated alternative to a long walk; an itinerary preference, not an accessibility assessment.

If your dates are fixed

May illustrates why the route matters. Istanbul has mean daily maximum/minimum temperatures of 22.3°C/13.6°C and 32.9 mm monthly rainfall; Antalya has 25.7°C/15.3°C and 33.3 mm. Pack a light layer for the Istanbul evening even if the next hotel is on the Mediterranean. A summer coast extension also needs a less demanding midday schedule. These statistics describe the named cities, not Cappadocia or a mountain resort.
