The currency is Turkish lira. No live exchange rate or daily cash budget is quoted. Recheck bank foreign-use settings and fees.
Cash and cards
The2026 Belgian mission guidance says cards are widely accepted in Istanbul and Ankara; some cash is useful for small vendors and tips. This is not a promise of nationwide universal acceptance.
ATMs and fees
Check current bank and ATM fees before use. No zero-markup or withdrawal-limit claim is made.
Backup plan
Keep some lira alongside cards. The mission describes tipping as customary and notes service fees may already be added. Check the bill first; no compulsory nationwide percentage is claimed.
SIM / eSIM
Turkcell has a tourist SIM/eSIM route with passport-based identity checks. In-app activation needs a chipped passport and a phone supporting eSIM and NFC; store activation is an alternative. Check current requirements before leaving.
Installing vs activating
Turkcell describes passport scan, NFC, liveness and video identity/contract checks for the app route. Follow the selected product instructions and entry/activation steps. An eSIM-compatible phone alone is not enough. No plan price is promised.
Backup connectivity
Keep accommodation and transfer details offline. Check a way to receive Indian-number messages with your Indian operator if banking needs it.
