International DigiYatra is moving into trials, not becoming a universal replacement for airport documents. The 27 October Bengaluru Airport announcement describes e-passport chip validation and facial verification on select international departures. A 27 October BusinessLine report, citing Digi Yatra Foundation, says trials at seven airports are due from 1 November 2026. Before relying on the lane, check your e-passport, phone, airline, actual flight and enabled airport touchpoints. Immigration and airline document checks remain.
1. Read trial dates as an announcement, not your flight’s clearance
BusinessLine reports a November-to-December 2026 trial covering Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai and Amritsar. It describes wider rollout planning for 2027 as dependent on feedback. These are announced programme details, not a confirmation that every gate or flight at all seven airports is ready. We checked the sources on 30 October, before the reported 1 November start. Recheck the departure airport and operating airline near travel; do not turn a future trial into an already-tested journey.
2. An ordinary passport is not automatically an e-passport credential
The reported trial is for eligible Indian nationals holding e-passports on participating Air India and IndiGo international services. BusinessLine says Air India’s international destinations and select IndiGo destinations are covered, subject to available infrastructure. That does not establish that every passenger on those airlines qualifies. The Bengaluru announcement is narrower at the airport level: select international flights, with e-passport chip validation followed by photo verification. Confirm your flight’s participation rather than relying on the airline name alone.
3. Your phone must be able to read the chip
The Foundation’s reported credential process scans the passport’s machine-readable zone, reads the embedded chip using a compatible phone’s NFC capability, captures a selfie and verifies the details. The resulting credential is stored in the Digi Yatra wallet on the device. A photograph of a passport, an uploaded PDF or an existing domestic Aadhaar-based profile is not proof that this e-passport credential has been created. Follow the current official app instructions; this article has not tested your phone, chip or personal identity record.
4. Enabled touchpoints can differ at the same stage of the trial
The Bengaluru release, carried by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East, says the initial trial covers terminal entry and security, with potential extension to boarding on select flights. BusinessLine describes enabled terminal-entry, Security Hold Area and boarding touchpoints subject to infrastructure availability. Read these as different scopes of the announced trial, not a promise of face-only processing from the terminal door to the aircraft. Follow the lane signs and staff instructions for the actual departure.
5. Passport, visa and airline checks do not disappear
Bengaluru explicitly says immigration and emigration remain separate statutory processes and mandatory airline document verification continues at designated counters. BusinessLine also says travellers must carry documents and complete immigration and other travel formalities. Keep the original passport, required visa or entry permission and the airline’s required journey documents accessible. Do not skip a counter because a facial gate opened, or treat an app credential as proof of destination entry eligibility.
6. Do not confuse DigiYatra with a separate immigration programme
Trip Keeper’s existing airport-stamping article explains the separate FTI-TTP eGate and registration question. This new trial is about DigiYatra’s digital credential at participating airport touchpoints. The Bengaluru release does not say enrolment grants immigration-eGate access. If your journey uses another programme, check that programme independently. This article is not a new FTI-TTP application guide and does not promise a passport stamp, entry permission or reduced immigration checks.
7. Prepare privately and keep the normal airport route available
DigiYatra Foundation’s contact page warns not to share Aadhaar numbers or copies for troubleshooting. Use the official support route for an app problem; do not send identity documents or an OTP to a stranger offering to activate international access. Our practical advice is to complete setup before departure day where the current trial permits, then keep the normal documents and airline timing buffer. A trial announcement is no reason to arrive later or assume staff can fix every phone problem at the gate.
Before choosing the trial lane
Check five things together: an eligible e-passport holder; a supported phone and completed credential; the operating airline and participating flight; that airport’s enabled touchpoints; and all normal travel documents and checks. Treat trial access as an optional processing route to confirm, not a condition for buying an overseas holiday. This source-based explanation does not certify any individual enrolment, flight or airport gate as usable.
