Is Hon Thom cable car manageable for senior travellers? Walking, steps and practical alternatives

Phu Quoc's famous over-sea cable car is the gentlest way to reach Hon Thom - if you plan around its odd operating windows and queues. Ticket rules, real boarding conditions, and what to skip on the island.

The short answer: the ride is easy - the logistics need respect

The Hon Thom cable car is by far the most senior-friendly way to reach Pineapple Island: a smooth 7.9 km flight over the sea from Anh Duong station in Sunset Town, instead of a bouncy speedboat. The cabins are large (up to 30 passengers) with bench seating, the ride is gentle, and the views are the attraction. The hard parts are not the ride - they are the queues, the broken-up timetable, and Sun World's strict ticket rules.

Tickets and rules that matter

  • Price (from 1 January 2026): adults 850,000 VND round trip; children 1-1.4 m tall 700,000 VND; under 1 m free. A combo adding the Mango restaurant lunch buffet runs 1,150,000 VND per adult.
  • What it includes: same-day return cable car, entry to Sun World Hon Thom, the Exotica Village area and one entry to Aquatopia water park, plus a drink coupon. Food beyond that, and paid beach services, are extra.
  • The strict part: prepaid tickets cannot be changed to another date or ticket type after payment, and cancellation costs 100 percent - refunds only when a payment fails. Tickets are valid one day, one entry, and you must keep the return half: staff may check it on the way back.
  • Buy online in advance (QR code from the confirmation email) - Sun World itself recommends this over the counter at Anh Duong station, which backs up on peak days.

The timetable trap

  • The cable car does not run all day. Sun World's official windows are roughly 9:30-11:30, 13:30-14:00 and 15:30-17:30, with a midday break of about two hours and another 90-minute gap in the afternoon. Times shift with weather, maintenance and season - confirm the day's windows at the station before boarding.
  • For seniors, the practical reading: go out on the first morning window (queues are shortest about 9:00-10:00, per Sun World), and fix your return window before you settle onto the island. Missing the last window means a very complicated evening.
  • Weather rule: operations pause in strong wind or storms, and even this record-holding system stops sometimes - a February 2026 breakdown left crowds waiting for boats. Keep the day flexible, especially outside the calm November-April season.

Queues, boarding and on-island walking

  • Queues build around the window changes. If standing in line is the concern, the WOW Pass (300,000 VND per person) gives priority boarding - Sun World itself suggests it for elderly visitors.
  • Boarding: cabins move slowly through the platform and staff manage the flow - ask them for a steadier boarding pace if needed; it is routine, not a special favour. Once inside, everyone sits for the roughly 15-minute crossing.
  • On Hon Thom: the station and Exotica Village area are manageable at a slow pace, but Aquatopia water park means wet surfaces, steps and crowds - honestly skippable for limited-mobility travellers. The ticket still makes sense for the ride, the views and a relaxed lunch.
  • Restrooms and food: facilities at both stations and on the island; the buffet lunch at Mango (served about 11:00-14:30) solves the midday gap neatly if you take the combo.

If the island side feels too much

  • Stay on the Sunset Town side: the cable car ride alone can be done as an out-and-back with minimal walking, and Sun World's current ticket listing includes Kiss Bridge entry in specific evening windows (before 7 PM and after 8:05 PM) - confirm when booking.
  • Sea condition note: the cable car flies above the sea, so it is unaffected by the chop that makes boat trips uncomfortable - one more reason it beats a speedboat for older travellers in the November-April window or beyond.

Honest verdict

For a senior traveller the Hon Thom cable car is one of Phu Quoc's best half days: sit-down, smooth and spectacular. Buy online, ride the first morning window, add the WOW Pass if queues are the worry, and treat the water park as optional. The island will wait; the timetable will not.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is the Hon Thom cable car suitable for elderly or limited-mobility travellers?

Yes - the ride itself is the gentlest way to reach Hon Thom: large cabins for up to 30 passengers with bench seating, a smooth 7.9 km crossing of about 15 minutes, and no boat chop. The real challenges are queues and the split operating windows. Ride the first morning window (shortest queues, about 9:00-10:00), ask platform staff for a steady boarding pace, and consider the 300,000 VND WOW Pass for priority boarding - Sun World suggests it for elderly visitors.

What are the Hon Thom cable car ticket prices and refund rules in 2026?

From 1 January 2026: adults 850,000 VND round trip, children 1-1.4 m tall 700,000 VND, under 1 m free; a combo with the Mango restaurant lunch buffet costs 1,150,000 VND per adult. The ticket covers the return ride, Sun World Hon Thom entry, Exotica Village and one Aquatopia entry. Rules are strict: prepaid tickets cannot be changed after payment, cancellation costs 100 percent, tickets are valid one day for one entry, and you must keep the return half for the trip back.

What are the Hon Thom cable car operating hours?

It runs in windows, not all day. Sun World's official schedule is roughly 9:30-11:30, 13:30-14:00 and 15:30-17:30, with a midday break of about two hours and another 90-minute afternoon gap - and times can shift with weather, maintenance or season. Confirm the day's windows at Anh Duong station before boarding, plan your return around the gaps, and never aim for the last minutes of the final window.
