Konark is a big open monument, not a small temple you tick off in ten minutes. For parents or anyone who tires on foot, the useful questions are how far you walk, how much shade there is and where you can sit. We could not find an official accessibility list, so this post says what is sourced and what you should check.
1. What is confirmed
The Archaeological Survey of India says the Sun Temple is open from sunrise to sunset and that children below 15 years enter free. It lists fees by nationality, so check the current tariff for your group before you go. Odisha Tourism's Bhubaneswar and Puri itineraries put Konark about 35 km from Puri. ASI describes a complex with the main temple on a platform, the Mayadevi temple to the west, a small Vaishnava temple in the south-west corner and a detached dance hall, the nata-mandira.
2. What we could not confirm
We found no ASI or Odisha Tourism page that lists ramps, wheelchair loans, seating or restrooms. The National Culture Fund records that tourist facilities at the site were inaugurated on 1 April 2018 and opened to tourists on 3 July 2018, but the page does not say what they include. A 2016 Telegraph report quoted a tour operator saying vehicles are not allowed to the end of the long pathway to the temple, and that the paths are not smooth. That is old and may have changed, so treat it as a reason to ask, not as current fact.
3. Questions to ask before you go
- Is there a wheelchair, and where do I collect it?
- How far is the walk from the gate or parking to the temple, and is there a ramp?
- Where are the nearest seating and restrooms?
- Is the platform steps-only, or is there a step-free route?
Ask your hotel or driver in Puri, or the ticket counter, and do not assume the answer.
4. Plan it for slower walkers
- Go at opening or late afternoon. It is an open complex with limited shade, so avoid the middle of the day.
- Take water, a hat and shoes with grip.
- Fix a driver who will wait. A day trip from Puri is a long round trip, so plan the return with a buffer.
- Decide in advance what a "short visit" means: the main temple and the wheel carvings from the nearest point you can reach, then stop.
5. If the walk is too much
View the temple from the nearest accessible point and spend the rest of the day in Puri. If someone in your group cannot do steps, a shorter visit, or skipping it, is a fair choice. Nobody gets extra points for finishing the whole complex.
