Is Majuli island manageable for senior travellers? Walking, steps and practical alternatives

Majuli is reached by ferry across the Brahmaputra. For senior travellers the crossing and the ghat matter more than the sights. Here is how to plan it.

For senior travellers, Majuli is less about walking tours and more about one question: how do you cross the river? The island, formed by changes in the course of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, is reached from Jorhat by ferry. The crossing, the ghat and the timing decide whether the day is comfortable. The sights themselves are secondary.

1. How you get there

The Majuli district website says that from Jorhat you take a ferry across the Brahmaputra from Nimati Ghat to Kamalabari Ghat or Afalamukh Ghat. It recommends booking passengers and vehicles in advance through the Assam Inland Water Transport website, asiwt.in. It also says ferries on the Jorhat-Majuli route run from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and that in the festival season they run every half hour. Outside that season the page does not give a frequency, so check the current timetable.

2. The part official pages do not tell you

Nothing we found describes steps, ramps, handrails or assistance at the ghats or on the boats. We will not guess. For parents with knee trouble or a walker, call the ferry authority or your hotel and ask three things: how do passengers board, can a vehicle go on the same ferry, and is there someone to help. Ask before you commit to the day.

3. Plan the day around the last ferry

With a last listed ferry at 3:30 PM, a Majuli day trip from Jorhat is a morning start with a firm return time. Leave margin. Missing the last boat is the one mistake that turns a day trip into an overnight stay. If that would be hard for your parents, stay on the island.

4. Practical alternatives

  • Drive in: the district page lists road routes from Lakhimpur via Dhakuakhana and from Dibrugarh via Bogibeel Bridge. Check the current road conditions before choosing this.
  • Hire a vehicle on the island: keep walking short and let the driver do the distances.
  • Skip some stops: pick one or two places and spend time there instead of covering ground.
  • Stay overnight: it removes the last-ferry pressure.

5. Keep it comfortable

Carry water, a cap and regular medicines. Wear shoes with grip for uneven ground near the river. Keep the bags light, because you will lift them on and off the boat.

Our checklist

Book ferry tickets on asiwt.in; ask about boarding help; confirm the last return ferry; plan one or two stops; carry medicines. This guide uses the Majuli District (Government of Assam) pages checked on 30 October 2026. Ferry times can change, so check them close to your date.
