Japan Tourist eVisa for Indians: The Complete VFS Application Walkthrough

The eVisa is real, but in India you still go to VFS - and at the airport, only a live issuance notice works. The full 2026 walkthrough: fees, the 3-month window, documents and the check-in rule.

Japan's eVisa for Indian tourists sounds like a fully online visa: apply on a website, get a visa by email, fly. The Indian process is not quite that, and the difference catches people out at two places - the VFS centre and the airport check-in desk. This is the complete walkthrough as it actually works in 2026, based on the Embassy of Japan in India and Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is the Japan eVisa for Indians fully online?

No. In India you still submit your application in person at a VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centre. What is electronic is the visa itself - you receive an eVisa instead of a passport sticker, and show a live visa issuance notice at the airport.

How much does the Japan tourist visa cost for Indians in 2026?

The visa fee is INR 500 for Indian nationals (single or multiple entry) from 1 July 2026, plus the VFS service charge. Any call or email demanding extra payment for verification or faster processing is a scam.

How early can I apply for a Japan visa from India?

Applications open 3 months before your travel date. Since processing can vary and cannot be expedited, apply early in that window, especially for cherry blossom and autumn travel.

Can I show a screenshot of my Japan eVisa at the airport?

No. Airlines require the live "visa issuance notice" displayed on your device with an internet connection. PDFs, photos, screenshots and printouts are all rejected at check-in.

Can I get a multiple-entry Japan visa through the eVisa system?

No. The eVisa covers single-entry tourism up to 90 days only. Multiple-entry, business, and visiting-relatives applications go through the regular paper process at VFS.

How long does the Japan visa take in India?

The Embassy does not publish a fixed timeline and warns that processing varies significantly with volume. No application can be expedited, so plan with slack and apply at the start of your 3-month window.
