Coloane is Macau's third island and its complete change of pace: no casinos, no crowds, a pastel village where the big event is a warm egg tart. It makes an easy, low-cost day trip from the Peninsula or Cotai - but the panda pavilion's split hours and Monday closure punish vague planning, so here is the day as it actually runs, with fares from official Macau sources checked 31 October 2026.
Getting there: MOP 6 or a MOP 100-120 taxi
Buses 21A and 26A run from the Peninsula through Taipa to Coloane village (about 30-40 minutes) for the flat MOP 6 fare - exact change needed, or MOP 3 with a prepaid card (dsat.gov.mo). A taxi on the official meter (MOP 21 flagfall) runs roughly MOP 100-120 from the Peninsula and around MOP 60-80 from Cotai; for parents or a couple with a beach bag, the taxi there and the bus back is a good compromise. Aim to reach the village by 10:00.
Morning: Coloane village at bench pace
The village is a few flat waterfront lanes: the yellow Chapel of St Francis Xavier (1885), faded Portuguese houses, and Lord Stow's original bakery - the shop that invented the Macanese egg tart, still baking them at MOP 12-15 each. Ninety minutes covers it happily, including a riverside sit-down with coffee. The Rua dos Navegantes stretch has dried-fish shops and tiny temples; nothing here costs anything.
Midday: the pandas, timed carefully
The Giant Panda Pavilion in Seac Pai Van Park is Coloane's headline sight - and it keeps split hours: 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00, last entry 16:45, closed Mondays (mocalendar.com). Admission is just MOP 10, free for children under 12 and seniors 65+. The trap is the 13:00-14:00 lunch closure: leave the village by 11:30 (a 10-minute taxi, or bus 15/21A/25 toward Seac Pai Van) to catch the late-morning session, or browse the village until 13:45 and go for 14:00. The pandas are most active in the cooler morning.
Afternoon: Hac Sa's black sand, then home
Finish at Hac Sa, a 1.5 km black-sand beach ten minutes further by bus (26A continues there) or taxi - free, breezy, with a promenade walk rather than swimming. Fernando's, the beloved Portuguese beach restaurant, is cash only (discovermacau.info). If legs are strong, the 19.99-metre marble A-Ma statue on Alto de Coloane (free entry, per whatsonmacau.com) is the optional climb - treat it as a skip for seniors, like the Carmo hill in Taipa. Buses 21A/26A take you back to Taipa or the Peninsula by early evening; total day runs 8-9 hours door to door.
