Muscat is one of the easiest international trips from Mumbai: under three hours nonstop over the Arabian Sea, four airlines to pick from and one-way fares that regularly start around Rs 8,100. The catch is paperwork, not distance - Oman's visa rules for Indians come with conditions. Here is every combination that actually makes sense, and the two that do not.
The nonstop flights (the only sensible way)
Schedule data confirmed in late October 2026 shows about 32 nonstop flights a week on the 1,590km route, with block times of 2h 45m to 2h 55m. The daily pattern: SalamAir OV762 leaves early morning (around 05:25-07:45 depending on the day), Oman Air flies WY202 at 10:15 and adds WY204 at 13:45 on busier days, and the evening bank has Air India Express IX313 at 21:20 and IndiGo 6E1267 at 21:45. Muscat is 1 hour 30 minutes behind India, so a 21:45 departure lands about 23:05 local. Fares on Indian booking sites show SalamAir one-ways from about Rs 8,129 and round trips from about Rs 14,856 on recent 7-day data - IndiGo and Air India Express price similarly, while full-service Oman Air usually sits a little higher and includes bags and meals.
The visa, in plain terms
Oman's foreign ministry keeps India on its second-group exemption list: Indian passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 14 days, but only if they hold a valid visa or residence for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan or a Schengen country, or GCC residence - and they must carry a return ticket, confirmed hotel booking, health insurance and enough funds. The 14 days cannot be extended. Without one of those visas, apply for an unsponsored tourist eVisa on the official evisa.rop.gov.om portal; the official advice is to lodge the application at least 4 days before travel. Check which situation your family falls into before booking anything.
Why train and road are not combinations
There is no train: the Arabian Sea sits between Mumbai and Muscat, and no passenger ferry runs the route at present. Overland by road would mean crossing Pakistan and Iran into the Gulf - a multi-day journey with permits and border formalities that make it impractical for a family holiday. One-stop flights via Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha exist in large numbers, but on a sub-three-hour nonstop route they only make sense if the fare is dramatically lower or you are deliberately combining the UAE into the trip.
Practical notes for the booking
Pick the departure bank by your plan, not just price: the SalamAir morning flight gets you a full first day in Muscat, while the evening IndiGo and Air India Express arrivals near 23:00 local mean a pre-booked transfer and a late dinner - with parents, the morning flight is worth a modest fare difference. Budget carriers charge for checked bags and meals, so compare final totals, not headline fares. Winter (November to March) is peak season in Muscat, so book 4-6 weeks out for that window.
