Muscat has a short golden window and this is it: November to March, when the brutal Gulf summer steps back and daytime highs sit between 25 and 30C. The trade-offs are simple - perfect weather means peak prices and the biggest crowds of the year. Here is the month-by-month picture from the WMO 1991-2020 climate normals for Muscat airport, and what to lock in early.
November: warming down, sea still warm
Highs around 29.9C, nights near 21C, about 6.9mm of rain all month. The sea is still bathtub-warm from summer, so November is the swimmer's pick of the window. Crowds build through the month; prices are climbing but not yet at their December peak. Book hotels 4-6 weeks out.
December and January: coolest, busiest, dearest
January is the coldest month - highs of 25.1C, nights down to 16.7C - and December is similar at 26.6C. These are the best walking months: the corniche, the souq and the Grand Mosque courtyards all feel effortless. Rain stays trivial (9.8mm in December, 14.3mm in January, usually as a single passing shower). The cost: this is peak of peak. Muscat budget data shows high-season hotel rates 30 to 50 percent above summer, and December-February is when the good properties fill - book 6-8 weeks ahead, and reserve opera tickets and day tours before you fly.
February: the sweet spot
Highs back to 26.3C, nights 17.8C, the least rain of the window at 6.5mm - and the holiday crowds thin after mid-January while weather stays identical. February gives you December's climate with shorter queues and slightly softer rates. If your dates are flexible, this is the month.
March: heating up, thinning out
March highs reach 29.4C with warm 20.3C nights and 11.5mm of rain - still very pleasant, but the last comfortable month before April pushes into the mid-30s. Crowds and prices ease. One caution: Ramadan falls in late February-March in some years (it moves annually), and during Ramadan daytime eating in public is restricted and some restaurants close until iftar - check the dates for your year before booking.
What to book first
In order: hotels for December-January (6-8 weeks out, since rates move 30-50 percent), then Royal Opera House tickets if a performance matters to you, then any wadi or Nizwa day tour for your exact dates. Everything else - souq, corniche, mosque, museum - needs no advance booking at all. And one myth to drop: the khareef monsoon greenery you see in Oman photos is Salalah in summer, 1,000km away - Muscat's winter is sunny, dry and blue.
