Onward-travel proof: check the rule, then prepare the document before check-in

An onward ticket shows travel out of the place you enter. Check the destination rule, recover the issued receipt and prepare it for the document check.

Sources checked: 28 October 2026. Hong Kong and Cathay are labelled examples, not worldwide requirements.

An onward journey takes you out of the place you are entering; a return journey takes you back. Whether you must show evidence of either depends on the destination, your immigration category and the carrier's document checks. Do not treat every international ticket as requiring the same onward proof.

1. Before booking: check the place you will enter

Hong Kong's Immigration Department provides a specific example: its visitor guidance requires adequate funds and onward or return tickets, except for the stated transit exception to Chinese Mainland or Macao. Keep that exception attached to the example. This does not establish the rules for another destination or resolve a particular traveller's visa or pre-arrival requirements. Source: Official guidance.

Read the destination's own current entry guidance for your actual status, not an old travel-forum answer or a seller's promise that a temporary reservation works everywhere. Ask the operating carrier what evidence it needs for the journey if the requirement is unclear.

2. Before leaving home: recover the issued onward record

Our suggestion: open the actual airline or issuer record. Check whether the onward journey was issued, whether it remains valid for travel and what document the issuer provides to show it. A search result, unpaid itinerary or booking request is not automatically evidence that you hold the ticket the destination requires. This is a verification question for the issuer, not a universal rule about one booking-reference format.

Cathay's published help says an eTicket itinerary receipt can be sent by email through Manage Booking. That is one carrier's supported way to recover its issued-document record; other carriers and agents have their own process. If someone else booked the onward flight, ask them for the actual current issued receipt, not just the screen used to choose it. Source: Official guidance.

3. Check the document against the actual journey

Our suggestion: confirm the traveller, departure place, date and next destination against the real plan. Check that the departure date fits the permission you intend to use. Do not assume that holding a ticket makes you eligible to enter the next country or transit through every point on that route.

Keep a readable copy available for the carrier or immigration check, but protect booking references and barcodes from public sharing. A tidy PDF cannot fix an unissued, cancelled or unsuitable journey.

4. At airline check-in: present the required evidence

Cathay says travellers must hold and present the boarding pass and valid destination-required travel documents, even after successful online check-in. Its page also says an invalid ticket can prevent travel. This is why online check-in is not the end of the document check; it does not mean every Cathay passenger is asked for an onward ticket. Cathay: documents at the airport.

Our suggested onward-proof checklist: the destination rule for your status; the actual issued, current onward or return receipt; the traveller name, departure place and date; and any entry documents required for that next destination. Keep the required originals and the copy format your airline asks for. This is not a complete passport or visa checklist.

Our suggestion: do not buy a questionable reservation solely because an advertisement says it is accepted worldwide. If you change or cancel an onward journey, reassess the proof you will show and the fare conditions before acting. This article does not recommend a paid ticket rental, guarantee refundable travel or approve spending on a replacement.

5. If the requirement or document is unclear

“My journey is to this destination under this status. Does this issued onward or return document meet your requirement, and is anything else needed?” Give the carrier the real case. No generic article can promise the answer for every nationality or immigration category. This guide helps you establish the evidence; it does not promise boarding or entry.

AI illustration: Fictional blank document folder and abstract onward and return arrows. Not an issued ticket, passport, visa, map or proof accepted by a carrier.
