The trap: Railay Beach and the Four Islands tour look like two separate days out on the Krabi map. In reality the Four Islands tour's last stop - Phra Nang Cave Beach - is on the Railay peninsula, and Railay itself is a 10-15 minute longtail hop from Ao Nang. Done naively, you pay to visit the same beach twice and discover too late that Railay has no road for a tour van to reach you. Here is how the two fit together, with the fares and timings that decide it.
First, understand Railay's one rule: boat only
Railay has no road at all. The only way in is by longtail boat - from the south end of Ao Nang beach (10-15 minutes, ฿100 one-way, ฿200 return, boats run 8 AM-6 PM and leave once about 8 passengers board), or from Ao Nam Mao pier near Krabi Town (~15 minutes, ฿100, minimum ~6 passengers). Buy a paper ticket at the Ao Nang Boat Club kiosks - one at the beach-road corner, one on the beachfront - not from the boat drivers. After dark the fare rises and boats thin out; miss the 6 PM last boat and you are negotiating a private charter. There is no app, no timetable, no online booking: this crossing is arranged in person, in cash, at the kiosk.
The overlap nobody warns you about
The standard Four Islands itinerary - Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Koh Tup's sandbar - ends at Phra Nang Cave Beach, which is Railay's southern beach. If you also plan a separate Railay day, you will stand on the same sand twice. Two clean ways to split it:
- Split the peninsula: take the Four Islands tour from Ao Nang (which covers Phra Nang), then do your independent Railay day for Railay West's sunset, the lagoon viewpoint hike and the climbing walls - skipping Phra Nang, since the tour already gave it to you.
- Or stay on Railay: sleep on the peninsula, do your beach days there, and book a private longtail from Railay itself to the Four Islands - private boats can collect you from Railay West; shared group tours generally cannot (their pickups are Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Klong Muang and Tubkaek hotels, reached by road).
Ticketing and fees, both halves
- Railay leg: ฿100 one-way at the kiosk; no park fee for the beaches themselves. The walking paths between Railay West, Railay East (mangroves, not for swimming) and Phra Nang are free and flat enough for flip-flops.
- Four Islands leg: group tours run ฿900-1,200 per person including hotel pickup, lunch and snorkel gear (June 2026 operator figures), plus the national park fee - quoted ฿200-400 per foreign adult depending on operator - paid separately, in cash, at the pier or on arrival. Ask the operator to time Koh Tup's sandbar stop to low tide; it only exists for an hour or two around low water.
A two-day plan that works
Day 1 - Four Islands tour. Pickup 7:30-9:00 AM from your Ao Nang hotel, boat from Nopparat Thara pier around 9:00-9:30, islands through the day, Phra Nang mid-afternoon, back by 3:00-4:00 PM. Day 2 - Railay independently. Walk to the Ao Nang beach kiosk after breakfast, longtail over (10-15 minutes), day on Railay West and the East-side paths, sunset on the west beach, and - the whole point - be at the Railay floating pier by 5:30 PM, giving the last 6 PM boat a margin. Staying on Railay overnight removes this deadline entirely, at the cost of road access to everything else.
The hidden complications, listed
- Tour vans cannot reach Railay. A hotel address on Railay breaks every shared-tour pickup; the system assumes a road. Either base in Ao Nang for tour days or use private boats from Railay.
- Leave-when-full cuts both ways. Mid-morning boats fill fast; the 5-6 PM return rush to Ao Nang can mean a queue of tired people at the Railay pier. Go a little early.
- Wading boardings. Both the Railay hop and Four Islands landings are wet beach boardings - wear sandals you can soak, and keep phones in a dry bag.
- Monsoon changes everything. November-March is the calm window; May-October swell can cancel Four Islands tours and make even the short Railay crossing bouncy.
- Luggage on Railay stays: bags get carried through ankle-deep water onto the boat - pack a day bag on top.
