Planning Shymbulak and Big Almaty Lake in one trip: timing, ticketing and hidden complications

Both icons, one trip - but not one day. Shymbulak's KZT 12,000 gondola and its maintenance windows, Big Almaty Lake's restricted road and passport checks, and the two-day plan that actually works.

Shymbulak and Big Almaty Lake are Almaty's two postcard mountains, and most itineraries try to squeeze both in. They fit one trip comfortably - but not one day, and each has complications that catch visitors out. Here is the plan that works.

Why separate days

Both destinations are high: the Shymbulak gondola tops out at 3,200m, and Big Almaty Lake sits at 2,511m. Stacking them in one day means most of the day above 2,500m - a recipe for headaches and breathlessness, especially for parents. They also sit in different gorges: Shymbulak rises above Medeu in the Malaya Almatinka valley, while the lake is in the neighbouring Bolshaya Almatinka gorge, 40+ minutes apart by road. Give each its own day, and put the lighter one second.

Day one: Shymbulak

The gondola from Medeu costs KZT 12,000 return (about Rs 2,520) to the 3,200m station. Go first thing - morning queues are short and clouds build by afternoon. The hidden complication: the lifts take maintenance breaks in the shoulder seasons. One recent window ran 19 October to 1 November 2026, and spring closures happen around late April to May. If the gondola is the point of your day, check shymbulak.com the night before; a closure turns the day into a taxi ride to a locked station. Medeu at the base - the famous skating rink - is a free, flat add-on.

Day two: Big Almaty Lake

The lake's complication is access, not altitude alone. Per the official Visit Almaty guide, the road up is restricted: weekend entry is limited once traffic builds, the last kilometres are sometimes closed to private cars (shuttle or walk instead), and the rules shift with the season. Everyone needs a passport - it is a border zone - and going down to the water is banned since the lake is the city's reservoir. Leave by 9 AM, arrange a car that waits, and read our senior-access guide to Big Almaty Lake before committing parents to it.

Putting it together

A clean three-day structure: day one city (Green Bazaar, Kok Tobe by gondola at KZT 10,000 return), day two Shymbulak, day three the lake - with the canyon as an optional fourth (our Charyn day-trip guide). Book gondola days around maintenance windows and the lake day on a weekday. Budget roughly KZT 12,000 + 10,000 + car hire per adult for the mountain days, on top of the hotel - the Almaty budget guide adds it up, and the 3-day itinerary is this plan written out hour by hour.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Can you do Shymbulak and Big Almaty Lake in one day?

Technically yes, but it is not advised. The Shymbulak gondola reaches 3,200m and the lake sits at 2,511m - doing both in one day keeps you above 2,500m for most of it, a recipe for headaches and breathlessness, especially for parents. They are also in different gorges, 40+ minutes apart by road. Give each its own day.

What does the Shymbulak gondola cost and what is the hidden catch?

Return KZT 12,000 (about Rs 2,520) to the 3,200m station. The hidden catch: the lifts take maintenance breaks in shoulder seasons - one recent window ran 19 October to 1 November 2026, with spring closures around late April-May. Check shymbulak.com the night before; a closure means a wasted taxi ride to a locked station.

What should you know before visiting Big Almaty Lake?

Three things: the road is restricted (weekend entry limited, last kilometres often closed to private cars - shuttle or walk), everyone needs a passport (border zone), and going down to the water is banned (it is the city's reservoir). Leave before 9 AM, arrange a car that waits, and check the rules the day before - they change with the season.
