The short answer: a comfortable three-day Almaty trip costs an Indian couple roughly Rs 30,000-45,000 on the ground, flights excluded - making it one of the cheapest international mountain getaways from India. The tenge makes mental math easy: KZT 1,000 is about Rs 210 (mid-market around Rs 0.21 per tenge, October 2026). Here is the breakdown, with each figure attributed rather than averaged.

Hotels: wide range, honest anchors

Private rooms in clean mid-range hotels and guesthouses run KZT 18,000-45,000 per night, about Rs 3,800-9,400 (thingstodoinalmaty.com). The citywide average nightly rate was about KZT 35,800 in May 2026 (rentus.kz) - that average includes five-stars, so real mid-range bookings land lower. Budget beds go much lower: hostel dorms and mini-hotels from KZT 5,000-12,000. At the top, the InterContinental and Ritz-Carlton class runs KZT 80,000 and up. Two comfortable nights: KZT 40,000-70,000, about Rs 8,400-14,700.

Food: canteen prices, cafe comfort

Kazakhstan's stolovaya (canteen) culture is the budget traveller's friend: a full point-and-eat meal is KZT 1,000-2,500 per person (kazakhstantourism.org). Casual restaurants run KZT 2,500-4,500 per head; the Green Bazaar's plov stalls feed two for KZT 3,000-4,000. A couple mixing canteen lunches and cafe dinners spends KZT 8,000-15,000 a day on food, about Rs 1,700-3,100 - less if they snack at the bazaar's free-sample counters.

Transport: cheap by app

Yandex Go rides inside the city rarely exceed KZT 3,000 (about Rs 630); the airport run is KZT 2,500-4,500. The bus and the single metro line cost KZT 120 with an Onay card (2gis.kz). KZT 3,000-6,000 a day for two covers generous taxi-hopping.

Activities: two cable cars dominate

The priciest tickets are the two gondolas: Kok Tobe at KZT 10,000 return and Shymbulak at KZT 12,000 return per person (official koktobe.com list; oxusroad.com). Everything else is small change or free: Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral, the Arbat, First President Park and the bazaar cost nothing; museums are typically a few hundred to about KZT 1,000. A full sightseeing day runs KZT 12,000-26,000 for two depending on which gondola you ride.

The totals, per couple per day

Budget style (guesthouse, canteens, buses, one gondola): KZT 25,000-35,000, roughly Rs 5,200-7,300. Comfort (mid-range hotel, mixed dining, taxis, both cable cars across the stay): KZT 55,000-80,000, roughly Rs 11,500-16,800. Splurge (five-star, resort dining): KZT 120,000+, from about Rs 25,000. Flights from Delhi are the separate big line - our Delhi to Almaty flights guide tracks those, and the airport transfer guide prices the first ride.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

How much should an Indian couple budget for an Almaty trip?

Excluding flights, about Rs 30,000-45,000 on the ground for a comfortable 3-day trip. Mid-range hotels run KZT 18,000-45,000 a night (Rs 3,800-9,400), food for two KZT 8,000-15,000 a day, transport KZT 3,000-6,000, and the two cable cars (Kok Tobe KZT 10,000, Shymbulak KZT 12,000) are the biggest tickets.

Is Almaty an expensive city?

No - for travellers from India it is one of the best-value international destinations. A filling stolovaya (canteen) meal costs KZT 1,000-2,500 (Rs 210-520), Yandex Go rides in the city stay under KZT 3,000, and Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral, the Arbat and the bazaar are all free. The main costs are the hotel and the two cable cars.

Do I need cash in Almaty, or do cards work?

Cards work almost everywhere in Almaty - restaurants, supermarkets, Yandex Go. Keep cash for small bazaar stalls and some Green Bazaar counters; KZT 20,000-30,000 is plenty. Get an Onay card (KZT 120 per ride) if you plan to use buses or the metro - buses do not accept cash.
