Getting from Almaty airport to Almaty city: taxis, costs and what to check before landing

15 km, three honest options: Yandex Go for KZT 2,500-4,500 (about Rs 520-940), bus 92 or 79 for 120 tenge with an Onay card, or the official taxi desk. Plus the arrivals-hall trap that quotes KZT 8,000-18,000 for the same ride.

Almaty airport sits about 15 km north-east of the centre, and the transfer is easy if you know one thing before landing: the price of the ride in advance. The drivers who approach you inside arrivals quote KZT 8,000-18,000 for a trip the app does for KZT 2,500-4,500. Here is every honest option, with fares from current 2026 sources.

Yandex Go: the default choice

Yandex Go (Russia's Uber equivalent, dominant in Kazakhstan) is what locals use. Economy from ALA to the city centre runs KZT 2,500-4,500 - about Rs 520-940 at roughly Rs 0.21 per tenge - and Comfort KZT 3,500-6,000 (airtraveler.club, 2026). inDrive works similarly. Set up the app with an Indian number before you fly (it works), pay by cash or linked card, and meet the car at the departures-level kerb if arrivals is congested. At 25-40 minutes depending on traffic, this is the door-to-door answer for families, seniors and anyone with luggage.

Bus 92 or 79: 120 tenge, but no cash

City buses are astonishingly cheap: 120 tenge (about Rs 25) with an Onay transport card; students, pensioners pay 60 and under-7s ride free (2gis.kz route data). Bus 92 is the main airport route, running roughly 06:00-23:00 via Abay Avenue into the centre in about 40 minutes, and bus 79 also serves the airport. The catch: buses take no cash - buy or top up an Onay card in the terminal before boarding (ridekz.com, tripby.ru). Fine for solo travellers with a backpack; with suitcases or parents, the app wins.

Official taxis and the arrivals trap

The airport's official taxi desk in arrivals quotes fixed, legitimate fares - higher than the app but metered-ish and safe for late-night arrivals when you want zero decisions. What to refuse: the freelance drivers who intercept you in the hall quoting KZT 8,000-18,000 for the same ride (airtraveler.club). A polite 'Yandex bar' (I have Yandex) ends the conversation. There is no train or metro to the airport; Almaty's single metro line does not reach it.

What to check before landing

Load Yandex Go and an offline map on the flight, have KZT cash or a working card for the car, and keep your hotel name in Russian or its pin ready. Flying in from Delhi, our Delhi to Almaty flights guide covers the routes and the 14-day visa-free entry. If you land after about 23:00, the buses are done - it is the app or the official desk, and at that hour the app is still usually cheaper.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

How much is a taxi from Almaty airport to the city centre?

On the Yandex Go app, Economy runs KZT 2,500-4,500 (about Rs 520-940) and Comfort KZT 3,500-6,000 (airtraveler.club, 2026). The airport's official taxi desk quotes higher but legitimate fixed fares. Freelance drivers in the arrivals hall quote KZT 8,000-18,000 for the same ride - decline them.

Is there a cheap bus from Almaty airport?

Yes: bus 92 (the main airport route, about 06:00-23:00, 40 minutes to the centre via Abay Avenue) and bus 79 - just 120 tenge (about Rs 25) with an Onay card; students and pensioners pay 60, children under 7 ride free (2gis.kz). Buses take no cash, so buy the Onay card in the terminal first.

How do I leave Almaty airport late at night?

After about 23:00 the buses stop, leaving two options: the Yandex Go app (usually still cheaper than the desk even at night) or the airport's official taxi desk. Avoid the negotiating drivers in arrivals - the same ride costs a third of their quotes on the app.
