Planning White Rann and Kala Dungar in one trip: timing, ticketing and hidden complications

Kala Dungar is about 25 km from the festival site, access stops at a military check-post, and the White Rann needs a permit. Here is how to line them up, and what we could not confirm.

The White Rann and Kala Dungar sound like one outing. On the ground they are two stops 25 km apart, with a permit and a check-post in between. Plan them as two blocks of the day.

1. What the official page says

  • Incredible India puts Kala Dungar about 25 km from the festival site and about 95 km from Bhuj. It is a hill with a Dattatreya temple said to be around 400 years old.
  • Access beyond the military check-post is restricted. Do not plan to go past it.
  • It suggests dawn or late afternoon for the visit and advises pre-booking your return transport.
  • The Rann Utsav runs roughly December to March on the same guide.

2. Permit and tickets

Gujarat Tourism points to rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in for the White Rann permit. We could not load that portal when we checked, and we found no official ticket price. Sites that call themselves the official Rann Utsav site carry prices, but we have not used them because we could not verify who runs them. Check the permit and fees with Gujarat Tourism or your stay before you pay anyone.

3. A way to sequence it

  • Late afternoon: Kala Dungar for the view, then stay for the light.
  • Evening: White Rann near the festival site, if your permit and entry timings allow.
  • Or flip it: White Rann at dawn, Kala Dungar before the sun gets low.

Pick one order and keep the return car booked for both stops.

4. Complications to expect

  • The drive from Bhuj to the festival area is 81 km, about 1 hr 20 min, before you add the 25 km hop to Kala Dungar.
  • Late-night cold: we found no official figure. Ask your stay and carry a layer.
  • Steps and walking at Kala Dungar: no official data. See our senior guide for what we could and could not confirm.
