This is a trick question. Puri and Konark are not two competing holidays. Konark is about 35 km from Puri, according to Odisha Tourism's itineraries, and most visitors treat it as a trip out of Puri. The real choice is where you sleep and how many days Konark gets.
1. Transfers
Puri has the railway station, which the district page places 3 km from the Jagannath Temple. An Odisha Tourism listing for a Konark property gives the nearest railway station as Puri, 29 km away, and Biju Patnaik airport 81.5 km away. So you arrive via Bhubaneswar or Puri either way, and Konark is the second leg. Our Bhubaneswar to Puri route guide covers the first transfer.
2. Pace
- Puri: the temple opens around 5.30 AM per its own visitor page, and phones, footwear and leather are not allowed in and around it. Beach evenings fill the rest. It suits a slow, multi-day stay.
- Konark: ASI says the Sun Temple is open sunrise to sunset, and children below 15 enter free. It is an open complex with long walks, so it suits a half day, not a base.
3. Who should pick what
Families with parents or toddlers usually do better sleeping in Puri and doing Konark as a single outing. If your only interest is the Sun Temple and you are driving through, a shorter Konark stop is enough. Our Konark senior-traveller guide covers the walking.
4. How to build the budget
We do not quote room or taxi prices, because we found no official rate list. Build it yourself:
- Stay: price Puri hotels for your dates directly with the hotel, and the temple administration's guest houses if they suit you.
- Konark outing: ask two drivers for a round trip from Puri with waiting time, in writing.
- Entry: check ASI's current tariff for your group. Children below 15 are free.
- Food: keep a daily line per person and add a margin.
5. The answer
Stay in Puri, add Konark for half a day, and skip a Konark overnight unless you want a quiet beach and early light.
