Queenstown's December-to-March summer is when the adventure capital is at its gentlest - long bright days, cool nights, and every outdoor experience running. It is also peak season, with the crowds and prices to match. Here is the month-by-month picture from long-term Queenstown climate data, and the trade-offs that decide when to go.
December: long days, building crowds
Average highs around 17.9C, nights near 9.6C, and about 136mm of rain spread over roughly 15 days - December is one of the wetter months, so a rain layer is mandatory kit. The payoff is daylight: sunset runs past 9pm near the solstice, doubling your sightseeing day. NZ school holidays and Christmas push crowds and hotel rates up through the month; book December stays 3-4 months out.
January: warmest, busiest
The warmest month on average - highs near 19.6C, nights 11.1C, about 121mm of rain. Fine days reach the low-to-mid 20s and feel glorious; wet days are cool and grey, and mountain weather can cancel a Milford trip on short notice. January is also peak-of-peak for crowds: New Zealanders holiday at home, and Queenstown's small hotel stock sells out. Everything bookable - gondola, Earnslaw, Milford tours - should be booked before you land.
February: the quiet winner
Statistically the driest month (about 95mm) with highs of 19.5C and nights of 11.2C - identical weather to January with meaningfully fewer people once the NZ school holidays end in late January. Rates ease slightly, restaurant bookings get possible again, and the lake is at its warmest for a brave dip. If your dates are flexible, February is the sweet spot.
March: autumn edges in
Highs ease to 17.2C, nights to 9.3C, rain around 108mm. The crowds thin further, the poplars start turning gold by late March, and the light goes soft and photogenic - Arrowtown's autumn colours begin. Evenings need a proper jacket, and daylight shrinks noticeably by month's end. A lovely, calmer shoulder month.
What to book first
In order: hotels for December-January (3-4 months ahead; the town sells out), then Milford Sound day tours and the Earnslaw cruise for your exact dates, then the gondola. Leave at least one unplanned day - the single most useful Queenstown strategy is holding a flexible day to swap a rained-out plan for a clear one. And pack for four seasons in one day: layers, a rain shell and sunscreen, whatever the forecast says.
