A day trip from the Rann to Bhuj is a long drive for one palace and a market. It works if you build around the closing hours and keep the return in daylight.
1. The facts
- Incredible India puts Dhordo 81 km from Bhuj, about 1 hour 20 minutes by road.
- It lists Aina Mahal, the "Palace of Mirrors", as open 9 AM to 12 PM and 3 PM to 6 PM. It is a break in the middle of the day, so do not arrive at lunch.
- It says Aina Mahal is one of three palaces in the walled old part of Bhuj, and that it has a museum with paintings, photographs, royal items and Kutch embroidery.
- It also mentions Bhujodi village, known for its preserved huts, as a nearby stop.
2. What we could not confirm
The Incredible India page does not give a weekly closing day or ticket price, and we found no official rail or ferry link between Dhordo and Bhuj. The route here is by road. Check the closing day and fee with your stay or at the gate before you set out.
3. A sample day
- 8:00 AM: Leave Dhordo, aiming to reach Bhuj around 9:30 AM.
- 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM: Aina Mahal and the old walled quarter.
- 12:00 to 3:00 PM: Lunch and rest, since Aina Mahal is shut.
- 3:00 to 4:30 PM: Second visit slot, or a market stop, or Bhujodi.
- 4:30 PM: Start back. With 1 hour 20 minutes of drive plus traffic and a buffer, you should reach Dhordo before dark.
4. Is it worth it
If you have the Rann for two or more nights, a Bhuj day breaks up the desert. If you only have one night at the Rann, skip it and save the drive for the White Rann at sunset.
5. Practical
- Agree on a driver who waits, with a price in writing.
- Do not tie a same-day flight out to this day.
- Check the permit rules for the White Rann, since Gujarat Tourism points to rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in. We could not load that site today.
