Separate-ticket international flights: build the buffer backwards from check-in

Build a separate-ticket flight buffer from check-in, arrival formalities, baggage and transfers. BA’s Heathrow example is not a worldwide guarantee.

Separate-ticket international flights: build the buffer backwards from check-in

There is no single safe number of hours for separate-ticket international flights. Start with the next airline’s check-in deadline (and any bag-drop deadline the airline sets), then work backwards through every step after the first flight arrives. Heathrow explicitly says its minimum connection times do not apply to separately booked flights. Official source.

Write the two flights in local time

Record both airport codes, terminals, local dates, operating airlines and issued ticket details. Calculate the scheduled gap from first arrival to second departure, including any date change. That gap is only the starting number: you cannot spend all of it waiting for the first flight because the next airline closes check-in before departure. Official source.

Risk matrix: what kind of time are you buying?

Compare these cases before choosing the departure. The point is to identify deadlines and recovery options, not to certify that a particular gap is safe.

Airline-protected connection confirmed

Use the operating airline’s applicable connection requirement and actual route. Allow for your own pace and assistance. Do not copy that requirement into a separately ticketed plan.

Recovery question: what does the ticket cover if the first flight is late? Confirm with the issuer.

Separate tickets: border, bags and new check-in

Budget deplaning, any immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, the actual terminal or airport transfer, then the next check-in and bag drop. After that, leave time for security, any departure formalities and the gate deadline.

Recovery question: is there a later usable flight, and what would changing or replacing the second ticket cost? Do not assume automatic protection.

Separate tickets: cabin-only and online check-in

Remove baggage reclaim only if every bag stays with you. Confirm whether the next pass is usable, whether a document counter check is required and whether the route stays airside. Online check-in does not remove every airport deadline.

Recovery question: what if a cabin bag is gate-checked, a pass cannot be issued or the airport route requires entry? Rebuild the budget rather than relying on the shorter route.

Heathrow: separate-ticket timing · BA: check-in and document checks

Build a deadline worksheet, not just a departure gap

Save a row for the check-in deadline (and any bag-drop deadline the airline sets), required document-check completion, security and departure formalities, and the boarding-gate deadline. Use the onward operating airline’s actual flight and airport instructions. If two deadlines differ, meet both rather than choosing the later one. Official source.

A labelled Heathrow example: four hours is not a worldwide rule

British Airways recommends at least four hours between separately ticketed flights through Heathrow because passengers must reclaim bags and may change terminals. That is BA’s Heathrow recommendation, not a guarantee after a delay or a minimum for every airport. Its check-in page separately lists Heathrow long-haul check-in closing 60 minutes before departure and tells travellers to check the exact flight in Manage My Booking. Even a quoted connection gap still contains an earlier check-in deadline. Official source.

BA: verify the exact flight’s check-in close time

Add a disruption margin after the necessary process

Keep a margin for inbound delays and slower steps, but do not treat extra time as airline protection. Check who owns the missed-flight risk.

Check the border before deciding that more hours solves it

Confirm that you can legally follow the required entry and recheck route before relying on a longer gap. Review the self-transfer entry checks.

If the usable margin is poor, compare a different plan

Compare a later onward flight, an earlier first flight, a protected itinerary or an overnight plan whose entry and accommodation are confirmed. Account for the cost and conditions of changes before paying. A seller offering a self-transfer does not itself establish that the airline will protect the gap; Kiwi’s own explanation says separate flights may require baggage recheck, terminal change or entry even without checked baggage. Official source.

Recalculate when the itinerary changes

Repeat the worksheet after a schedule, airport, terminal, baggage or document-check change. If travel is underway and a deadline is no longer reachable, contact the issuer and onward airline promptly for the applicable options. Do not plan to beat a closed counter or rely on a gate agent waiving a deadline.

AI illustration: Fictional travellers build a connection-time worksheet at home. No real booking, airline interface or guaranteed buffer is depicted.

Quick questions

Can I use the airline’s minimum connection time for separate tickets?

Not as a separate-ticket assurance. Heathrow explicitly says those minimums do not apply to separately booked flights; build the actual arrival-to-departure process.

Is BA’s four-hour Heathrow recommendation a guarantee?

No. It is a named Heathrow recommendation, not a worldwide safe buffer or protection after every delay.

Does online check-in let me use the whole gap?

No. Verify the check-in deadline (and any bag-drop deadline the airline sets), document checks, security and gate deadlines for the actual flight.
