Self-transfer with an airport change: who covers the ground leg?

Start with two airport codes, not the city name

Our practical suggestion: compare the arrival airport code with the next departure airport code before paying. A city label can hide a journey between different airports. For this guide, an airport change means a separate ground journey, not simply moving between terminals. Record the actual terminals too; the coach stop and departure building still matter. Official source.

The physical job remains, whatever the booking label

British Airways says passengers changing between London airports must have the correct documents to enter the UK and collect their bags because they are not automatically forwarded. This is a labelled London example, not a global baggage rule. Confirm the actual country’s border route, baggage handling and next check-in with the relevant authorities and carriers. Official source.

Risk matrix: the original airport change and the disruption replacement

Our suggested comparison asks who arranges the ground leg and what help has actually been established. It does not classify airline tickets or promise coverage. For the ticket relationship, use our connection-responsibility guide.

Ground-leg case Arrangement and cost to establish Covered event to check Our suggested decision
The original itinerary already changes airports Identify the ground operator, service, boarding point, baggage conditions and who buys the ticket. Do not infer a coach ticket or road-delay remedy from a flight booking or seller protection label. Confirm the original transfer in its own right before buying the flights.
After an airline disruption, the offered replacement departs from another airport Confirm the replacement reservation and how to reach its departure airport, including who arranges and initially pays for transport. Dohop standalone ConnectSure mentions pre-approved public ground transport for Alternative Transport from a different airport or station, at its discretion. That is not proof of cover for the original planned road journey. Get the applicable transport approval before accepting or buying the new plan; verify the exact product’s terms.

Labelled London example: the coach ride is not the connection

Heathrow’s inter-airport page says to add passport control, bag reclaim, check-in, security, waiting and traffic or service delays to the ground travel time. National Express sells a direct Heathrow-to-Gatwick coach and lists boarding points and luggage rules. Use the current operator journey planner for your date and exact terminals. Our suggestion: compare that service with the onward airline’s earlier deadlines, not just its departure time; no universal safe gap is given here. Official source.

Entry permission can stop the plan before transport matters

GOV.UK distinguishes airside transit from landside transit through border control. Its Visitor in Transit page says what you need to do depends on your nationality and whether you need to enter the UK. Check the owning guidance for your passport, itinerary and circumstances to establish eligibility and the permission required. Our suggestion: verify the required entry route with the owning border authority before relying on any airport-changing itinerary. More hours or a transport ticket do not supply that permission. Official source.

Before paying, settle the ground-leg question

Our suggested checklist: exact airports and terminals; legal entry route; bags that must travel with you; a usable transport service with confirmed luggage and boarding conditions; the next flight’s counter and gate deadlines; the original transfer’s cost; and separate written recovery terms for a changed airport. If travel has begun and the plan no longer works, contact the issuer and onward carrier before making unapproved changes. Official source.

Quick questions

Does airport-change protection automatically include my original coach?

Do not assume that. Check the exact product, covered trigger and original ground-leg arrangements. Dohop’s standalone replacement-transport clause is not proof of cover for every planned inter-airport journey.

Can I use an airside transit permission to travel between airports?

Check the owning border authority for the actual route. In the UK example, airside and landside transit are different; changing airports requires checking entry documents rather than assuming an airside route.

Can I buy a taxi and claim it later?

Ask the airline or covering seller first. Confirm approval, eligible transport, who pays and the receipts required; no automatic taxi reimbursement is promised here.
