Sources checked: 28 October 2026. Confirm the current instructions for your own booking and goods.

Travelling without a checked suitcase removes a baggage-collection task. It does not turn an international arrival into a domestic arrival or make the goods in your cabin bag invisible to customs. This guide is for a traveller entering India after an international flight, with an onward domestic flight or a journey home. International airside transit without entry is a different case.

Before landing: check that the bag really stayed with you

Keep your passport, flight details and any entry documents required for your nationality ready. If the airline took your cabin bag at the gate or aircraft door, it is no longer safely treated as a bag you are carrying. Ask where it will be returned: aircraft-side or at a reclaim belt. Lufthansa gives examples of cabin bags returned at the aircraft steps or tagged for the baggage carousel. That is a carrier example, not one collection point for every airline. Confirm yours. Lufthansa: cabin bags in the hold.

1. Follow the international arrival route through immigration

For the ordinary arrival sequence and programme-specific clearance exceptions, use the domestic-transfer walkthrough; travelling without a checked bag does not remove the entry checks required for your route.

Entry-document caution: Follow the actual signs and staff for your entry route. Keep the passport and any nationality-specific permission usable; do not apply a foreign visitor’s form requirements to a returning Indian citizen without checking the owning authority. This guide does not set out arrival-card or visa eligibility.

2. No bag in the hold: do not wait for a suitcase you never checked

If every bag is still with you and the airline has not instructed you to collect anything, there is no checked suitcase to wait for on the belt. Continue along the signed customs route through the arrivals area. That is skipping the collection task, not permission to use an unmarked shortcut, a staff door or a domestic departure gate. Official source.

If a gate-checked bag is missing, contact the arriving airline’s baggage staff before leaving the relevant arrivals area. Do not proceed as cabin-only just because the original bag met a cabin size limit. Keep its receipt and ask where the bag was sent.

3. Clear customs according to the goods, not the size of the bag

CBIC’s February 2026 guide says passengers not carrying dutiable or prohibited goods may use the Green Channel; those needing to declare goods for duty or carrying specified prohibited items must report to the Red Channel. The absence of a checked suitcase does not decide the channel. A small backpack can still contain goods that need declaration or are restricted. Official source.

Customs caution: Reporting an item at Red does not make a prohibited import permitted. Check the current official rules for what you are carrying. If unsure, seek Customs help before choosing the route; do not assume Green means there can be no inspection. This article quotes no allowance, duty rate or foreign-currency threshold. Use CBIC’s current official guidance for an item-specific check; this article is not a reason to bypass customs.

4A. If this is your destination: leave after the required arrival checks

After the required immigration and customs process, follow the public exit and your onward transport plan. Delhi Airport’s arrival guide describes customs before leaving arrivals. Keep the exact terminal and exit meeting point available for the driver. A small bag does not mean your driver can meet you inside a controlled area. Official source.

4B. If taking a domestic flight: confirm the passenger handoff

Before leaving the transfer area, ask your onward airline where you should go for this booking. Confirm the departing terminal, current boarding pass, whether a document or check-in step remains, the security route and the gate deadline. No checked bag may remove bag drop, but it does not prove check-in, security or the terminal change is complete. Official source.

Delhi Airport’s transit guide says connections can use different terminals and that passengers must undergo security. It tells separate-ticket travellers to check in again and go through security. Use those points to identify the remaining passenger tasks, not to assume that every airline’s desk, kiosk or transfer service accepts your booking. Official source.

A cabin bag alone does not establish EasyConnect eligibility; check the scoped transfer guidance and obtain the carrier’s instructions for your actual booking.

Before the next flight: check what you still need to do

Have the current domestic pass, correct terminal and gate, and a confirmed route to security. Check that your cabin bag meets the next carrier’s allowance and screening rules. A duty-free purchase accepted on the international flight is not by itself proof that it can pass the next domestic screening; verify that separately. Do not turn time saved at reclaim into a guaranteed connection buffer.

Cabin-only arrival checklist

All bags actually with you, including any gate-returned item; immigration completed for the actual entry route; customs channel chosen for the goods; next airline and terminal confirmed; current onward pass or remaining counter step identified; security route and deadline clear. The useful shortcut is one less collection task, not fewer border obligations.

Quick questions

Does only cabin baggage let me skip Indian arrival customs?

No. CBIC describes baggage collection if any, followed by customs. Choose the channel for the goods, not whether a checked suitcase exists.

Can I go straight to the domestic gate because I have no checked bag?

Do not assume so. Confirm the actual entry or special connection process, onward pass, terminal, security and any remaining airline step.

What if my cabin bag was taken at the aircraft door?

Ask the arriving airline where it will be returned. It may require collection; keep the receipt and do not leave the relevant arrivals area without checking.
