Singapore and Hong Kong are the two default answers for an Indian family's first international holiday: both about five hours from Delhi, both safe, clean, English-friendly and packed with child-friendly attractions. But they are very different trips. Singapore is compact, tropical and effortless; Hong Kong is bigger, hillier, seasonal and slightly more demanding. Here is the honest comparison on paperwork, flights, budget, pace and food, so you pick the right one for your family's next slot rather than the more famous one.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Do Indians need a visa for Singapore and Hong Kong?

Yes for Singapore: an entry visa through an authorised visa agent (INR 2,100 plus agent fee, 3-5 working days). Hong Kong needs only a free online Pre-arrival Registration for Indian nationals - instant result, valid six months for multiple 14-day visits.

Which is cheaper for an Indian family, Singapore or Hong Kong?

Totals are similar. Singapore spends more on attraction tickets but saves on hawker food; Hong Kong has many free attractions but smaller, pricier hotel rooms. Hong Kong also saves a family of four roughly Rs 13,000 in visa fees, since its Pre-arrival Registration is free.

Which is better for young children, Singapore or Hong Kong?

Singapore. It is compact, stroller-friendly, fully air-conditioned between attractions, and food is easy for fussy or vegetarian kids. Hong Kong suits families with children aged 8 and above who can handle more walking, stairs and crowds.

What is the best time to visit Hong Kong vs Singapore?

Hong Kong is best November to February - cool, dry and clear. Singapore has no bad month (25-31 degrees year-round), though December is its wettest and February its driest. For Indian summer holidays, Singapore is the safer weather bet.

How long is the flight from Delhi to Singapore and Hong Kong?

Almost identical: about 5 to 5.5 hours non-stop to either city, with daily direct flights on full-service and budget airlines from Delhi and other Indian metros.

Is vegetarian food easy to find in Singapore and Hong Kong?

Much easier in Singapore, thanks to its South Indian and Chinese Buddhist vegetarian traditions - pure-veg restaurants and hawker stalls are everywhere. Hong Kong has Indian restaurants and some veg options, but mainstream menus rely heavily on pork, seafood and oyster sauce.
