Tbilisi to Kazbegi as a day trip: what a realistic itinerary looks like

Kazbegi is Georgia's best day out: 157km up the Military Highway to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170m. The 20 GEL van, the 420 GEL private car, the tour-bus middle ground - and the honest senior verdict.

Kazbegi is the day trip that makes people extend their Georgia trip: the Georgian Military Highway climbing the Aragvi valley past Ananuri fortress and the Gudauri viewpoint, ending at Gergeti Trinity Church on its ridge at 2,170m under the 5,054m bulk of Mount Kazbek. It is doable in a day - a long one. Here is the realistic version.

The three ways to go

Budget: the marshrutka van from Tbilisi's Didube station, 20 GEL a seat each way (about Rs 680), cash at the ticket desk, with around eleven departures a day in autumn from 08:00. Three hours each way, no sightseeing stops. Middle ground: group tours at $16-26 per person (checked on GetYourGuide in early October 2026) covering Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri, a Pasanauri lunch stop and the Gudauri viewpoint - but note you pay 20 GEL cash extra for the 4x4 up to Gergeti, and you get only about 30 minutes at the church. Best with parents: a private car with driver, about 420 GEL for the whole car for the day on platforms like GoTrip - stops where you say, leaves when you say, and door-to-door from your hotel.

The realistic schedule

Whatever the mode, the day runs 10.5-12 hours: leave Tbilisi by 08:00-09:00, stops at Zhinvali and Ananuri by mid-morning, lunch in Pasanauri (the khinkali heartland), the Gudauri viewpoint and the 2,379m Jvari Pass early afternoon, Stepantsminda by about 14:00-15:00, then the last leg up to Gergeti - a bumpy 20-minute 4x4 ride (20 GEL) or a steep 90-minute walk. Church and views for an hour, back down, home by 19:00-21:00.

The senior verdict

Honest version: this is a big day - six hours of winding mountain road, altitude to 2,379m, and a church that requires either a rough 4x4 track or a serious uphill hike. It suits parents who handled city days easily and do not get carsick; take the private car so the pace is yours, sit them up front, and treat the Gergeti climb as optional (Stepantsminda town itself has the view). Parents with motion sickness, heart conditions affected by altitude, or limited mobility should swap Kazbegi for Mtskheta - the old capital, 30 minutes away and nearly flat. Book nothing before checking the mountain weather; cloud kills the whole point.

Back in the city, the 3-day Tbilisi itinerary shows where this day slots in, and the budget guide rolls up the costs.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

How do you do a Kazbegi day trip from Tbilisi?

Three ways (October 2026 prices): the marshrutka van from Didube station, 20 GEL a seat each way (about Rs 680), cash, around 11 daily departures from 08:00, 3 hours each way, no stops. Group tours at $16-26 per person (Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri lunch, Gudauri viewpoint) plus 20 GEL cash extra for the 4x4 and only about 30 minutes at the church. Best with parents: a private car with driver, about 420 GEL for the whole car for the day - your pace, your stops, door-to-door.

What does a realistic Kazbegi day-trip schedule look like?

Whatever the mode, the day runs 10.5-12 hours: leave Tbilisi 08:00-09:00, Zhinvali and Ananuri mid-morning, lunch in Pasanauri (the khinkali heartland), the Gudauri viewpoint and the 2,379m Jvari Pass early afternoon, Stepantsminda by about 14:00-15:00, then the final leg to Gergeti - a bumpy 20-minute 4x4 ride (20 GEL) or a steep 90-minute walk. An hour at the church, back down, home by 19:00-21:00.

Is Kazbegi suitable for senior parents?

Honestly, it is a big day - six hours of winding mountain road, altitude to 2,379m, and a church requiring a rough 4x4 track or a serious uphill hike. It suits parents who handled city days easily and do not get carsick: take the private car, seat them up front, and treat the Gergeti climb as optional (Stepantsminda town has the same view). For motion sickness, altitude-affected heart conditions or limited mobility, choose Mtskheta instead - the old capital, 30 minutes away and nearly flat.
