Practise with the traveller holding their own phone. The goal is not memorising an app menu; it is being able to unlock the device, find the correct issued pass and show it when asked. Ask what is comfortable instead of assuming every older traveller needs the same help.

Start with the right document

Show the difference between a booking confirmation, a check-in confirmation slip and a boarding pass. Air India says domestic online check-in can issue a mobile pass or printable PDF, while some international-linked journeys may receive a confirmation slip requiring counter verification. Do not teach that every screen with a booking reference is a scannable boarding pass.

Practise finding it without a fresh login

Where the airline provides a downloadable pass, save the current issued version using the supported method. Practise opening it on the traveller’s own device without relying on a family member’s chat history. Check that the saved view is complete and readable. A saved copy does not prove that check-in succeeded or replace any airline-required document verification.

Rehearse a small sequence

Ask the traveller to unlock the phone, open the pass, identify the passenger, flight and date, and display the code without covering it. Adjust readable text size or brightness as needed and practise returning to the pass if another screen opens. Do not edit, redraw or crop away required information to make the screen look simpler.

Prepare for a flat battery or a changed flight

Carry a current printed copy where the airline supports it, and keep the booking details and valid travel identification accessible. A paper backup must match the flight too. If a seat, flight or pass changes, retrieve the new version through the airline rather than forwarding an old screenshot. Check the current gate on airport displays; the number saved on the phone can change.

Use help without exposing the booking

Agree who can help and how to contact them. Do not publish the pass or booking reference on social media or give identity documents to a stranger offering app support. If the phone fails, ask airline staff for the supported process; do not assume every kiosk or counter has the same eligibility, timing or price. Leave time for that fallback before check-in and gate closure.

Quick questions

Is a booking confirmation a boarding pass? No. Identify the issued travel document correctly.

Can a saved gate number become stale? Yes. Recheck current airport displays.

Should I simplify the pass by editing its code? No. Retrieve an intact airline-issued pass.
