Go to the airline’s staff or assistance desk and confirm the flight’s status. The scheduled departure time is not the time you can arrive at the gate. A plane visible through the window may already be closed for boarding; do not try to cross a closed barrier or enter an airside door.

Check the flight and gate first

Show the current boarding pass and ask whether this is the correct gate and whether boarding is closed. Read the flight number as well as the destination, because several flights can serve the same city. If the gate moved, explain the route you followed and the information you saw. Give the facts calmly; a gate change is not by itself proof of compensation or a right to board late.

Why a pass does not keep the gate open

IndiGo’s domestic airport guidance lists gate closure 25 minutes before departure, and its carriage terms say mere check-in or a boarding pass does not guarantee boarding when deadlines are missed. Other airlines can use different instructions. Follow the time on your pass and current airline messages; do not substitute a universal “last ten minutes” rule.

Ask what happens to the booking

Ask whether the airline has recorded you as a gate no-show and what options remain under the fare conditions. Ask about the onward or return sectors in the same booking rather than assuming they remain unchanged. If another ticket is separate, contact its airline too. This guide does not promise a refund, free rebooking or protection for a separately booked flight or train.

If you already checked a bag

Tell airline staff that you handed over checked baggage and show the receipt. Ask where the bag will be held or returned and how you should leave the controlled area. Do not assume it will appear at a carousel automatically or follow you onto a newly purchased flight. Follow the airline and airport’s instructions rather than trying to retrieve it yourself.

Compare the full next option

Before accepting a new flight, confirm the date, airport and terminal, operating airline, total price, baggage, check-in cutoff and any conditions for the old booking. Keep receipts and the airline’s written explanation where available. If you believe an airline-caused problem needs review, preserve the facts and use its official complaint process, without treating a complaint as an immediate boarding permission.

Quick questions

The aircraft is still there. Must staff let me board? No. Aircraft presence does not establish that boarding remains open.

Will my checked bag transfer to a new ticket? Do not assume it. Ask staff to trace and explain the bag handoff.

Is a free replacement flight guaranteed? No. Ask for the options and applicable fare conditions.
