- Distance between them
- 112 km (Prayagraj district site)
- Prayagraj Sangam
- Boats rented at the ghat near the fort (district site)
- Varanasi core
- Ghats, aarti, old-city lanes closed to big vehicles
- Budget bands
- No official figures. Build your own from quotes
Both are Ganga pilgrimage towns, and both are in Uttar Pradesh. They are not the same trip. One is a dense old city built around ghats. The other is a spread-out city built around a river confluence.
1. How they compare
| Question | Varanasi | Prayagraj |
|---|---|---|
| Main draw | Ghats, Ganga Aarti, Sarnath nearby | Sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet |
| Feel | Compact old city, lanes, one-way streets | Wider, more spread out, with the fort and Sangam at the edge |
| Getting in | Airport 22 km from the city, direct Delhi flights (district site) | Eight railway stations in city limits; Prayagraj airport serves limited routes (district site) |
| Best months | November to February | Same season suits both, but check Magh Mela or Kumbh dates if you are going near them |
2. Transfers
The Prayagraj district site gives 112 km by road between the two. It does not give a drive time, so ask a driver or check a live map for the day. Rail links both cities, but we have not verified a specific train here, so check IRCTC.
3. Pace for a family
- Varanasi: needs more walking and early starts for the ghats and the aarti.
- Prayagraj: fewer sights, more distance between them. The Sangam visit needs a boat, which you rent at the ghat near the fort.
- Accessibility: neither district site lists step-free access. Ask your hotel for the exact walk to each stop.
4. How to build the budget
We found no official budget bands for either city, so we are not printing any. Build yours in four lines:
- Stay: three hotel quotes per city for your exact dates.
- Transport: your train or flight, plus a driver quote for the 112 km.
- Local: boat price agreed in advance, and one cab quote per day.
- Food and entry: leave a buffer, then compare totals.
5. Which one
Choose Varanasi if the aarti and ghats are the point. Choose Prayagraj if the Sangam is, or if you want a calmer base. Short on time, pick one. With four or more days, do both.

Prayagraj district website (prayagraj.nic.in); Varanasi district website (varanasi.nic.in). Checked on 30 October 2026. The Prayagraj site gives the airport as 12 km from the city on one page and 6 km on another, so confirm before booking a transfer.
