Web check-in with a checked bag: Air India still needs your bag

Online check-in does not hand over your suitcase. See Air India’s domestic baggage-drop flow and the separate international document-verification step.

Web check-in with a checked bag: Air India still needs your bag

Checking in online and checking a suitcase into the hold are two different steps. Air India says domestic passengers who checked in online do not need to check in again, but must still visit its counter to hand over checked baggage. Web check-in is not permission to arrive at the gate with a suitcase you intended to check.

Domestic: boarding pass, then bag drop

Use the designated Air India baggage-drop or check-in counter. Its FAQ says to present the boarding pass or confirmation slip and identification; staff assist with tagging the checked bag for its destination. Follow the specific instructions on your e-ticket because procedures can vary by airport and destination.

Where an appropriate self-baggage-drop facility is available, follow that airport’s instructions. Air India says a domestic passenger with only cabin baggage, or after dropping checked bags, can proceed to security. This does not remove security checks or the airline’s baggage rules.

International: do not skip document verification

Air India’s FAQ separately says international passengers must visit the airport counter for document verification and baggage drop after online check-in. Some international journeys, including domestic segments followed by international flights, may produce a confirmation slip rather than a boarding pass.

A confirmation slip is not enough to board. Take it to the counter and obtain the boarding pass after document verification. The FAQ identifies Delhi T3 Australia-bound flights as a self-service exception; do not generalise that facility to every international airport or route.

Keep the airport deadlines

Arrive in time to complete bag drop, document checks where required, security and boarding. Online check-in is not an extension of the airport cut-off. Check your actual booking and current airline instructions instead of assuming the online check-in closing time is the baggage-drop deadline.

Before leaving the counter, keep the baggage receipt and check the bag’s tagged destination. This guide does not determine whether bags are checked through on a connection, set your weight allowance or cover another operating airline’s rules. Ask about those separate questions for your itinerary.

Quick questions

Does online check-in also drop my bag? No. You must hand the checked bag over at the appropriate facility.

Can a domestic cabin-bag-only traveller go to security? Air India says yes after online check-in, subject to the travel and security requirements.

Can I board with a confirmation slip? No. Air India requires the boarding pass after counter verification.

Is this the rule for every airline? No. It is Air India’s published flow; check your operator.
