The short answer
Both are air-conditioned sleeper classes. The official names on Indian Railways' availability page are 2A - Second AC and 3A - Third AC. The number tells you the main difference: a 2A bay stacks berths two high (lower and upper), while a 3A bay stacks them three high (lower, middle and upper).
What that means for you
Because one more berth fits into the same bay, 3A carries more people per coach. In 2A you get more headroom above your berth, more open space in the bay, and fewer people sharing the same area. Both classes have side berths along the aisle (marked SL and SU), and bedding is provided in both.
2A is the higher class, so the fare is higher. The exact difference depends on the train and distance, so check it on the official fare enquiry for your specific train before deciding.
Reading your ticket
Coach codes differ by class: 3A coaches are marked B1, B2, B3 and so on, while 2A coaches are marked A1, A2 and so on. So "B4, 21" is a 3A berth and "A1, 15" is a 2A berth. Our post on finding your berth inside the coach explains the panels to look for after boarding.
Which one should a family pick?
For an overnight journey with elderly parents or light sleepers, 2A is the calmer choice when the budget allows - fewer people, more space, no middle berth. For most family trips, 3A is the common, good-value choice. Compare current availability for your train and date; no class guarantees confirmation. If budget matters most, also look at 3E (AC 3-tier economy), which the railways sell at a lower fare than 3A - our separate post explains 3E versus 3A.
Common questions
Is bedding included in both?
Yes. AC sleeper classes include the railway's linen provision; a 2023 Railway Board circular keeps it for the 3E economy coaches too.
Do both have side berths?
Yes, both have side lower (SL) and side upper (SU) berths along the aisle.
How much more does 2A cost?
It varies by train and distance. Check the current fare for your train on the official fare enquiry page before booking.
How do I know my class from the ticket?
The coach code: A-coaches are 2A, B-coaches are 3A, M-coaches are 3E. The class is also printed on the ticket itself.
Sources checked on 25 October 2026: Accommodation Availability Enquiry (official; class codes and full names), Railway Board Commercial Circular 6 of 2023 (21.03.2023; 3E as a separate class, coach IDs M versus B, linen in 3E coaches, fare difference handling). Bay layouts described are the standard convention; coach designs vary.
