- Booked 3A, got M?

The short answer
3E is AC 3-tier economy - the cheaper version of 3A. Indian Railways' availability page lists it separately as "3 AC Economy" next to 3A (Third AC). Both are air-conditioned sleeper classes with berths stacked three high; 3E sells at a lower fare because the coach fits more berths into the same space.
What the official circular says
Railway Board's Commercial Circular No. 6 of 2023 (21 March 2023) restored 3E as a separate class. From 22 March 2023, bookings in these coaches are made as 3E instead of 3A, and the coaches carry the code M instead of B. The circular also keeps the provision of linen (bedding) in the AC 3-tier economy coaches.
For the 2023 changeover, the same circular provided that passengers booked in 3A but allotted a berth in a 3E coach at charting would get the fare difference back automatically on e-tickets, with an SMS. For how a specific case is handled today, confirm with the railway helpline.
Reading your ticket
The coach code tells the class: B1, B2, B3 are regular 3A coaches; M1, M2 and so on are 3E economy coaches. So "M2, 34" means a berth in an AC 3-tier economy coach.
Which one should you pick?
If you want AC comfort at the lowest AC sleeper fare, 3E does the job - you get the same three-tier layout and bedding. If you want a little more space around your bay, pick 3A. For more space still, 2A stacks berths only two high. Either way, check the fare difference for your specific train on the official fare enquiry page before booking.
Common questions
Is 3E air-conditioned?
Yes. It is an AC sleeper class, sold at a lower fare than 3A.
Is bedding included in 3E?
Yes. The 2023 Railway Board circular keeps the linen provision in AC 3-tier economy coaches.
I booked 3A but got an M-coach. What now?
The 2023 circular provided for automatic fare-difference refunds with an SMS during the changeover. If this applies to you, keep any SMS and confirm current handling with the railway helpline.
How do I spot 3E on my ticket?
The class prints as 3E and the coach code starts with M instead of B.
