The short answer

Both are seated, air-conditioned classes on Vande Bharat trains - no berths. On Indian Railways' availability page, CC is AC Chair Car and EC is Executive Class, the premium seated option. EC sells at a higher fare and fits fewer seats into each coach.

What the official pages say

The railways' own class list spells out the two names, and a Western Railway press release for the Ahmedabad-Jodhpur Vande Bharat describes the train as comprising "AC Chair car and Executive Chair car". So on these trains you are choosing between the two seated classes - the launch releases we checked list no sleeper option.

Space and seating

Reports from the railways' launch announcements put Executive Chair Car coaches at 52 seats and regular Chair Car coaches at 78 seats. Fewer seats in a similar coach means more room per passenger in EC. Rake designs have evolved, so treat these numbers as the standard pattern, not a guarantee for every train.

Reading your ticket

The class prints as CC or EC, with your coach and seat number next to it. Seats are reserved in both classes, so your seat number is final once the ticket is confirmed.

Which one should you pick?

For a short daytime hop, CC does the job comfortably at the lower fare. On a longer run, EC is the comfort upgrade when the budget allows - that judgment comes from the seating difference above (fewer seats, more room per passenger), not from any promise about the coach. Compare the exact fare difference for your train and date on the official fare enquiry before booking - and compare current availability, because no class guarantees confirmation.

Common questions

Is EC worth it for elderly parents?
The extra room per passenger is a comfort upgrade, not an accessibility feature. If a parent needs help boarding or moving around, arrange it with the railway directly - ask about boarding or accessibility assistance for your specific train before you travel - rather than relying on the class. Check the fare for your specific train first.

Is food included?
Catering arrangements vary by train. The booking flow on IRCTC shows whether catering is included for your service, so check there.

Is EC like business class?
Roughly, yes - it is the premium seated class on Vande Bharat, above Chair Car.

Can I switch from CC to EC after booking?
That depends on current railway rules and seat availability. Check with the railway before travel what class-change options apply to your ticket.

Sources checked on 25 October 2026: Accommodation Availability Enquiry (official; class codes and full names), Western Railway press release (official; Vande Bharat comprises AC Chair car and Executive Chair car), Economic Times/IANS launch report (29 May 2023; 52 seats in Executive Chair Car, 78 in Chair Car). Seat counts and layouts vary by rake version.
