AI illustration: fictional travellers ask at a generic railway help desk. This is not an actual station, revised route, ticket or boarding authorisation.

A diverted train does not necessarily stop at a nearby substitute station. Before booking a taxi, read the notice against your train number, journey-commencing date, booked boarding station and destination. The immediate job is to find out which part of your journey has changed.

Separate a diversion from a changed starting or ending station

A Southern Railway notice dated 3 January 2026 shows a diversion: the train takes a different route, skips named stops and has explicitly listed additional stops. That is different from a train starting somewhere else or ending early.

A 2 October 2026 Punekar News report on Central Railway’s Pune-Hadapsar works illustrates those other categories. It separately lists diverted services, short terminations, short originations and revised departure times. This is a news report, not a directly inspected railway order. Both examples concern past dates; neither is a current disruption alert for your ticket.

Do not treat “via” as a promise that the train will stop at every place on that route. Look for the actual omitted and additional halts, and ask railway staff about the stop that matters to you.

Read a real notice in four parts

For a worked example only, the January Southern Railway notice says train 16128 leaving Guruvayur at 23:15 on specified January 2026 dates would run via Virudunagar, Manamadurai, Karaikkudi and Tiruchchirappalli. It separately names Madurai, Sholavandan, Kodaikanal Road, Dindigul and Manapparai as skipped stops, and Aruppukkottai, Manamadurai, Sivaganga, Karaikkudi and Pudukkottai as additional stops.

Read that as four separate checks: the train number; the dates defined by departure from Guruvayur; the list of skipped stops; and the expressly added stops. The origin departure is at night, so do not automatically match a notice’s journey-start date to the calendar date on which you planned to board farther along the route.

If your booked stop is skipped, the route description alone does not settle where you may board instead. Ask the railway to confirm the usable station, time and ticket requirements for your actual PNR. A historical notice is useful for learning how to read one, not for choosing today’s pickup.

Confirm the live journey before moving

The same official notice asks passengers to check the railway’s official website/app, NTES or IRCTC for revised schedules before starting. Use your current train and journey details, and check the latest notice or update rather than a forwarded screenshot with no date. If information is unclear, speak to the station enquiry or reservation staff before committing to a road transfer.

Our handoff checklist is practical: write down the confirmed station name and code, its address, the revised train time, the time you need to leave, and who will collect you at the other end. Recheck the onward hotel or transport plan if your arrival station changes. Do not assume the railway has arranged a taxi, hotel or replacement seat unless that is explicitly confirmed.

If you cannot use the diverted journey, check the right claim

IRCTC’s currently hosted Refund and Cancellation Rules, section 14 list distinct e-ticket TDR reasons: “Train Diverted And Passenger Not Travelled”, “Train Diverted And Train Not Touching Boarding Station”, and the reason for a train not touching the destination. For these diversion reasons, the table gives a filing limit of 72 hours from the scheduled departure at the passenger’s boarding station. That is not 72 hours from when you read the notice.

An older, undated IRCTC disruption notice referring to Gujjar agitation clearly spells out the boarding-station and destination-not-touched categories too. We use it to clarify the category wording, not to announce an ongoing agitation or replace the currently hosted rules. Do not select a reason that does not match what happened.

Short termination is a different case: the currently hosted table lists 72 hours from scheduled arrival at the passenger’s destination for “Train Terminated Short Of Destination”. Partially travelled journeys have their own category and certificate requirements. Do not reuse a diversion deadline or document list blindly for a journey you partly completed.

Use the booking account’s supported claim route and keep the ticket, relevant notice and acknowledgement. Section 14 says the concerned Zonal Railway decides acceptance, rejection and the refund amount, not IRCTC. A TDR submission is a claim, not money approved; do not promise a full refund or an automatic transfer to another train.

Sources checked 27 October 2026. Historical January and early-October examples are labelled as examples, not current operating instructions. IRCTC’s hosted refund document carries a 19 January 2026 amendment in its title and an older effective-rule heading. Check the exact ticket and current railway advice before acting.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Does a diverted route mean I can board at any station on it?

No. The route and the stopping pattern are different. Read the skipped and expressly added stops, then ask railway staff to confirm a usable station, time and ticket requirements for your actual PNR.

What deadline does IRCTC list for the e-ticket diversion reasons?

The currently hosted rules list 72 hours from scheduled departure at the passenger’s boarding station for the specified diversion TDR reasons. It is not from when you read the notice. The Zonal Railway decides acceptance and amount.

Is short termination the same refund category?

No. The listed short-termination reason uses 72 hours from scheduled arrival at the passenger’s destination. Partially travelled journeys have their own category and certificate requirements. Match what actually happened.
