Spain from India: plan the trip

Content updated 1 Nov 2026 Facts last checked 1 Nov 2026

Spain rewards an Indian family like few countries in Europe: Gaudi's Barcelona and Madrid's plazas and museums, Moorish palaces in Andalusia, beaches on two coasts, and a food culture built around sharing. Meals run late and cities stay out late, so a little planning helps with children's body clocks. This page brings the key details together in one place - the Schengen visa guide, the best months to go, and the packing and money essentials - with food, phrase, events and flight-route guides linked as they publish.

Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for Spain?

Yes. Indians apply for a Schengen visa through BLS International centres across India. The visa fee is EUR 90 per adult, EUR 45 for children aged 6-11 and free under 6, plus the BLS service charge. You can apply up to 6 months before the trip and should apply at least 15 days before travel.

When is the best time to visit Spain?

April to June and September to October suit most families - warm days, long light, and the big cities before or after peak crowds. July and August are very hot in Madrid and Andalusia (regularly above 35C) but fine on the northern and Mediterranean coasts. Seville's Feria de Abril (12-18 April in 2027) and Las Fallas in Valencia (March) are worth planning around.

Is English enough in Spain?

In Barcelona, Madrid and the resort coasts, yes - hotels, stations and attractions work in English. In smaller towns and local bars, menus are often Spanish-only, and staff appreciate any Spanish you try. Our phrase guide covers the essentials - start with Gracias (thank you) and La cuenta, por favor (the bill, please).

How do we get around with children?

High-speed AVE trains link Madrid with Barcelona (about 2.5-3 hours), Seville, Valencia and Malaga, and children under 4 travel free. In cities, metros are clean and cheap; Madrid and Barcelona metros run past midnight on weekends. Keep Spanish meal times in mind - lunch around 2 pm, dinner rarely before 8:30 pm - and carry snacks for hungry children in between.

Are there direct flights from India to Spain?

Not right now. All India-Spain journeys are one-stop, via hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Frankfurt or Munich. Delhi to Madrid takes about 11-12 hours total on the fastest routings; Mumbai is similar. Air India and Spanish authorities have discussed restarting the Delhi-Madrid nonstop, but no date is confirmed - check our flight-route guides before booking.
