Spain events guide for families

Content updated 1 Nov 2026 Facts last checked 1 Nov 2026
The short answer

Spain's festival calendar is one of Europe's richest: Las Fallas burns giant monuments in Valencia in March, Seville holds its solemn Semana Santa and then parties for a week at the Feria de Abril (12-18 April 2027), Pamplona's San Fermin runs 6-14 July, Bunol's tomato fight lands on the last Wednesday of August (25 August 2027), and Barcelona's La Merce closes the season in late September. Most highlights are free to watch; dates sit on the official sites linked below.

March

Las Fallas

Valencia Typical timing

Usually Every year 1-19 March. Monuments go up on 15 March and are burned on the night of 19 March, Saint Joseph's day.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Giant satirical monuments fill the streets of Valencia for three weeks, with daily mascleta firecracker shows at 14:00 in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the burning of everything on the final night.

For families: Deafening but unforgettable - keep small children at a distance during the mascleta and bring ear protection. The quieter morning parades and the flower offering on 17-18 March suit families better.

Event website

Semana Santa (Holy Week)

Seville and nationwide Typical timing

Usually 21-28 March 2027 (Palm Sunday 21 March to Easter Sunday 28 March); the dates move with Easter each year.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Hooded brotherhoods carry huge candlelit floats through Seville's old town day and night for a week - Spain's most solemn and spectacular religious festival.

For families: Streets close and crowds are dense; watch from the start of a route rather than the cathedral squeeze, and book accommodation months ahead for Seville.

Event website

April

Feria de Abril

Seville Dates confirmed for 2027

12 Apr 2027 to 18 Apr 2027 · Dates from Diario de Sevilla, checked 1 Nov 2026

A week of flamenco dresses, horse parades, dancing and caseta tents on the Los Remedios fairground - Seville lets its hair down two weeks after Holy Week.

For families: Public casetas welcome visitors - look for the ones marked with a green flag. Go in the afternoon with children; evenings are packed. Fireworks close the fair on the last night.

Event website

July

San Fermin (running of the bulls)

Pamplona Typical timing

Usually Every year 6-14 July: opens with the Chupinazo rocket at 12:00 on 6 July, bull runs each morning at 08:00 from 7 July.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Nine days of non-stop fiesta in Pamplona's old town - white clothes, red scarves, morning bull runs, giant-figure parades and music until late.

For families: The bull run itself is for adults only and is watched from behind barriers; families come for the morning giants and big-heads parade, the fairground and the atmosphere.

Event website

August

La Tomatina

Bunol (near Valencia) Dates confirmed for 2027

25 Aug 2027 · Dates from Tomato Festival Spain, checked 1 Nov 2026

Twenty thousand people throw over-ripe tomatoes at each other in Bunol's streets - the world's most famous food fight, ticketed and messy by design.

For families: Minimum age rules apply - check the ticket terms (young children are not admitted to the fight zone). Families often watch the morning build-up instead and enjoy Bunol's quieter festival fringe.

Event website

September

La Merce

Barcelona Typical timing

Usually Around 24 September each year (the feast of La Merce); the city confirms the programme and exact days in summer.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Barcelona's own festa major: castellers (human towers) in the Placa de Sant Jaume, the correfoc fire-run, giants parading through the Gothic Quarter and hundreds of free concerts.

For families: The castellers and giants are perfect for children; the correfoc (fire run) is loud and spark-filled - watch from behind the barriers. Most events are free.

Quick questions

Which Spanish festival is best with children?

Las Fallas and La Merce stand out: Fallas has daytime parades and monuments children can walk around (skip the loud midday mascleta), and La Merce has human towers, giants and free concerts. The Feria de Abril's afternoon fairground also works well. San Fermin's bull run is for adults - families come for the morning giants parade instead.

When is the Feria de Abril in 2027?

12-18 April 2027, confirmed by Seville's press. The fair opens on Monday 12 April - the Lunes de Pescaito, when fried fish is eaten at midnight - and closes with fireworks on Sunday 18 April. The dates follow Easter (Semana Santa 2027 runs 21-28 March), so the fair shifts year to year.

Do we need tickets for these events?

Mostly no: Fallas streets, Semana Santa processions, the Feria's public casetas, San Fermin's giants parade and La Merce's concerts are all free to watch. You pay for La Tomatina (ticketed entry), bullring seats in Pamplona, and private casetas at the Feria - book those weeks or months ahead on the official sites linked below.

When are Spanish festival dates announced?

San Fermin is always 6-14 July and Fallas always 1-19 March. Semana Santa and the Feria follow Easter. La Tomatina is the last Wednesday of August (25 August 2027, already confirmed), and Barcelona publishes La Merce's programme in summer. Check the official sites linked with each event before booking travel.

What is the busiest time for a Spain trip?

Seville in Semana Santa and the Feria (late March to mid-April in 2027) is the single busiest stretch - book months ahead. Pamplona in San Fermin week and Valencia in Fallas week are just as full. Late May, June and October are the calm sweet spots with good weather.
