Switzerland from India: plan the trip

Content updated 1 Nov 2026 Facts last checked 1 Nov 2026

Switzerland is the classic Indian family trip to Europe: lakes and snow peaks, mountain railways that feel like rides, chocolate and cheese, and cities that are clean, safe and easy with children. Trains run from Zurich airport straight into the Alps, and everything works to the minute. It is also one of Europe's most expensive countries, so planning matters. This page brings the key details together - the Schengen visa, the best months to go, money and packing essentials - with food, phrase, events and flight-route guides linked as they publish.

Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, and Indians apply for a Schengen visa (category C) through VFS Global centres across India - VFS took over Swiss visa applications on 1 October 2025. The fee is EUR 90 per adult, EUR 45 for children aged 6-11 and free under 6, plus the VFS service charge. You can apply up to 6 months before the trip and should apply at least 15 days before travel.

When is the best time to visit Switzerland?

June to September is best for lakes, cable cars and high-altitude walks, with long daylight. December to March is the snow season for skiing and sledging. April-May and October are quieter and cheaper, though some mountain lifts pause between seasons. Whatever the month, pack layers - it is much colder at 3,000 metres than in the valleys.

Is English enough in Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland has four national languages (German, French, Italian and Romansh) and signs change as you cross the country, but English is widely spoken in hotels, stations and attractions. Locals still appreciate a greeting in their language - our phrase guide covers Gruezi, Bonjour and Grazie basics.

How do we get around with children?

Trains are the answer. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the mountain railways are punctual, stroller-friendly and scenic, and trains run directly from Zurich airport to cities and Alpine resorts. Children under 6 travel free, and 6-15 year olds travel free with a parent holding the Junior Card or Swiss Family Card. A Swiss Travel Pass covers most trains, boats and buses and can pay off on a busy week.

Is Switzerland expensive - how do we budget?

It is one of Europe's priciest countries. Save by self-catering breakfasts and picnics from Migros or Coop supermarkets, drinking tap water (safe everywhere, with free fountains in towns), and choosing a rail pass over point tickets. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, so you need little cash - keep some Swiss francs for mountain huts, small cafes and lockers.
