Switzerland events guide for families

Content updated 1 Nov 2026 Facts last checked 1 Nov 2026
The short answer

Switzerland's calendar is anchored by living traditions: Basel's Fasnacht fills three February days with masked parades (15-17 February 2027), Zurich burns the Boogg snowman at Sechselauten (16-19 April 2027), the Montreux Jazz Festival takes over Lake Geneva in July (2-17 July 2027), flower-crowned cows descend from the Alps each autumn, and December brings Christmas markets nationwide plus Geneva's costumed Escalade (11-13 December 2026). Dates sit on the official sites linked below.

February

Basler Fasnacht (Basel Carnival)

Basel Dates confirmed for 2027

15 Feb 2027 to 17 Feb 2027 · Dates from Basel Tourismus, checked 1 Nov 2026

Switzerland's biggest carnival: at 4 am the city lights go out and thousands of masked pipers and drummers march with lanterns through the old town, continuing for three days of parades and satire.

For families: The Monday 4 am Morgestraich is magical but very crowded - hold children's hands or watch from a window. The Tuesday afternoon Kinderfasnacht (children's carnival) is the family highlight, with costumes and confetti.

April

Sechselauten

Zurich Dates confirmed for 2027

16 Apr 2027 to 19 Apr 2027 · Dates from Switzerland Tourism, checked 1 Nov 2026

Zurich's spring festival: the city's guilds parade in historic costume, and at 18:00 a snowman figure called the Boogg is burned on a bonfire - the faster his head explodes, the better the summer.

For families: Children love the burning snowman, but the bonfire area gets packed - arrive early or watch from the lakeside. The Sunday Kinderumzug (children's parade) on 18 April is the gentler family option.

July

Montreux Jazz Festival

Montreux Dates confirmed for 2027

2 Jul 2027 to 17 Jul 2027 · Dates from Switzerland Tourism, checked 1 Nov 2026

Sixteen days of music on the shore of Lake Geneva - despite the name it spans jazz, soul, rock and pop, with free open-air stages along the lakeside promenade alongside the ticketed halls.

For families: The free lakeside stages, food stalls and promenade work well with children in the daytime; evenings are loud and late. Book accommodation very early - Montreux fills up for the full fortnight.

September

Alpabzug (cattle descent)

Alpine villages nationwide Typical timing

Usually September to October; each village fixes its own date as the herds come down from the summer pastures.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Flower-crowned cows with giant bells parade down from the high Alps into their villages, with farmers' markets, cheese and music - Switzerland's most photogenic autumn tradition.

For families: Made for children: cows, bells, cheese stalls and village fairs. Dates vary by village - check the myswitzerland.com listings for the week you are travelling and arrive by mid-morning.

November

Basel Christmas market

Basel and nationwide Dates confirmed for 2026

26 Nov 2026 to 23 Dec 2026 · Dates from Switzerland Tourism, checked 1 Nov 2026

Switzerland's largest and prettiest Christmas market fills Barfusserplatz and Munsterplatz with stalls, lights and fondue stands - most cities and towns light their own markets through December.

For families: Children get carousels, candle-dipping and gingerbread decorating at the Munsterplatz kids' area. It is cold - dress in layers and warm up with hot chocolate (or mulled wine for the adults).

December

Fete de l'Escalade

Geneva Dates confirmed for 2026

11 Dec 2026 to 13 Dec 2026 · Dates from Geneve Tourisme, checked 1 Nov 2026

Geneva's own festival remembers the failed 1602 night attack with costumed torchlit parades through the old town, drummers, and the tradition of smashing a chocolate cauldron (marmite) filled with marzipan vegetables.

For families: The chocolate marmite smashing is a family ritual children adore, and the old-town parades are easy to watch. Sunday's grand parade is the biggest; expect crowds but a friendly, local atmosphere.

Quick questions

Which Swiss festival is best with children?

The Alpabzug cattle descents in autumn - cows with flower crowns and bells, village markets and cheese stalls - are made for children. For city festivals, Basel's Fasnacht has a dedicated children's carnival on the Tuesday, and Sechselauten's Sunday children's parade in Zurich is the gentle way to see it. The Escalade's chocolate cauldron-smashing delights every child in Geneva.

When is the Montreux Jazz Festival 2027?

2-17 July 2027, confirmed by Switzerland Tourism and the canton of Vaud. The lineup for the 61st edition is announced in spring 2027. Many lakeside stages are free; the headline concerts are ticketed and sell out fast, so book accommodation early - Montreux fills for the whole fortnight.

Do we need tickets for Swiss festivals?

Mostly no: Fasnacht parades, Sechselauten, the Alpabzug descents, Christmas markets and the Escalade parades are all free public events. You pay for Montreux Jazz's headline concerts (many stages are free), for food and rides at markets, and for special Fasnacht events. Book concert tickets on the official sites linked below.

When are Swiss festival dates announced?

The fixed ones are easy: Fasnacht follows Ash Wednesday (15-17 February 2027), Sechselauten is the third Monday of April (19 April 2027) and the Escalade always marks 11-12 December. Montreux Jazz confirms its July dates a year ahead (2-17 July 2027). Alpabzug dates are set village by village each spring - check myswitzerland.com listings before travelling.

What is the busiest time for a Switzerland trip?

Two peaks: the summer hiking season (mid-June to September, with Montreux's festival fortnight especially full) and the Christmas market weeks of December. Basel during Fasnacht and Zurich on Sechselauten Monday book out far ahead. Late April, May and October are the calm value windows, though some mountain lifts pause between seasons.
