Two Balinese festivals matter most when you plan a trip with parents: Nyepi, the Day of Silence in March or April (8 March in 2027), when the whole island stops for 24 hours, including flights, and Galungan and Kuningan, a ten-day period of temple ceremonies. Neither is a show. Both are religious days, so plan around them and be respectful. Pick your dates with them in mind.
March
Nyepi (Day of Silence)
8 Mar 2027 · Dates from Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia, checked 23 Oct 2026
The whole island turns off lights and sound and stops daily activity for 24 hours. Indonesia Travel lists four rules: no fire or lights, no work, no travel outside, and no entertainment. These apply to visitors too. Ngurah Rai International Airport closes for 24 hours, and local watchmen called pecalang enforce the rules.
For families: Do not book flights on Nyepi. Plan to stay in your hotel, bring medicines and snacks, and keep voices and screens low. Book a hotel that offers indoor activities. Many parents find it a restful day if you plan for it, and a stressful one if you are caught on the road.
June
Galungan and Kuningan
Usually set by the Balinese Pawukon calendar, ten days apart. 2026: 17-27 June. Dates for 2027 are not announced yet. The 2026 edition ran 17 Jun 2026 to 27 Jun 2026. Next dates not yet announced.
Galungan marks the return of ancestral spirits to earth, and Kuningan, ten days later, marks their journey back. Visitors will see decorated bamboo poles called penjor along the streets, families in ceremonial dress, offerings and temple visits.
For families: Dress modestly and quietly if you go near a temple, and ask before taking photos of ceremonies. Roads near temples can be busy. Confirm the exact dates from a Bali official calendar before you book.
Bali Arts Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali)
Usually about a month, mid June to mid July. In 2026 it ran 13 June to 11 July. The 2026 edition ran 13 Jun 2026 to 11 Jul 2026. Next dates not yet announced.
Bali's month-long arts festival in Denpasar, with parades, dance and music performances, crafts and food stalls. Indonesia Travel lists entry as free.
For families: Evenings are lively and crowded; keep children close, carry water, and expect slow traffic around the venue in Denpasar.
