Canada events and festivals guide for families

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Canada's calendar has something in every season: Canada Day fireworks on 1 July, the Calgary Stampede's ten days of rodeo in July, the Montreal Jazz Festival filling the city's streets in early summer, and a warm Thanksgiving long weekend in October. For Indian families the special one is Diwali - celebrated big in Toronto, Brampton and Vancouver on 6 November 2026. Winter ends the year with Christmas markets, the 25-26 December holidays, and New Year's Eve fireworks at Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square. Sights stay open through most events; book Stampede and Canada Day hotels early.

Quick questions

Which Canadian event is best for families?

In summer, the Calgary Stampede in July - ten days of rodeo, rides and free pancake breakfasts that children never forget. In winter, Toronto's free New Year's Eve at Nathan Phillips Square. And for Indian families, Diwali in Brampton or Vancouver on 6 November 2026 feels like home.

When is Diwali celebrated in Canada?

On 6 November 2026, the same day as India - an observance rather than a statutory holiday, but Canada's huge Indian community celebrates it big: Brampton and Toronto's Indian neighbourhoods light up, Vancouver and Surrey host melas, and landmarks like the CN Tower mark the festival.

What is the Calgary Stampede and when is it?

The world's most famous rodeo: ten days every July (usually the first half; 2027 dates not yet announced) of rodeo events, chuckwagon races, a giant midway and free pancake breakfasts across Calgary. Book hotels months ahead - the city fills completely.

Is everything closed on Christmas Day in Canada?

Almost everything - 25 December 2026 is a nationwide statutory holiday, so shops, museums and most restaurants close. Plan a ski day, a winter walk or a hotel Christmas meal, and buy groceries the day before. Boxing Day reopens with famous sales.

When is the best time for fall colours in Canada?

Late September to mid-October, peaking around the Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend (second Monday of October) across Ontario and Quebec - Algonquin Park, the Laurentians and the Niagara Parkway are the classic drives. Book country inns well ahead for October weekends.
