Canada trip planner for Indian families

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026

Canada is the big North American holiday Indian families plan around school summer breaks: Air Canada and Air India fly Delhi to Toronto nonstop in about 16 hours, and Air India flies Delhi to Vancouver nonstop in just over 16. Indians need a visitor visa - the temporary resident visa, applied for online with biometrics at a visa application centre in India; our visa guide walks through the documents and timelines. The season matters more here than almost anywhere: May to October is the comfortable window for most of the country, with the famous fall colours in September and October, while winter is a serious, snowy affair best saved for ski trips. Canada sits 9.5 hours behind India at Toronto and 12.5 behind at Vancouver, so give the family two gentle days to adjust. Once there, life is easy: English everywhere and French in Quebec, a warm politeness with an "eh" at the end of sentences, the dollar in loonie and toonie coins, superb vegetarian and Indian restaurants across Toronto and Vancouver, and 120-volt sockets - your phone and laptop chargers work with a simple flat-pin adapter, but check the label before plugging in anything heavier. Give a first trip 10 to 14 days: Toronto and Niagara Falls, Vancouver and the Rockies, and French-flavoured Montreal and Quebec City if time allows.

Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for Canada?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a Canadian temporary resident visa (visitor visa), applied for online through the IRCC portal before travel; biometrics are given at a visa application centre in India. Processing takes weeks to months, so apply well ahead - our Canada visa guide covers the documents, fees and steps.

How long is the flight from India to Canada?

Delhi to Toronto is about 16 to 17 hours 45 minutes nonstop on Air Canada or Air India; Delhi to Vancouver is about 15 to 16 hours nonstop on Air India. One-stop options through London, Frankfurt or the Gulf take 19 hours and up.

What is the best time to visit Canada?

May to October suits most first trips: warm cities, open attractions and long days, with spectacular fall colours across Ontario and Quebec in September and October. Winter (November to March) is beautiful but seriously cold - come prepared, or save it for a ski holiday.

What is the time difference between India and Canada?

Toronto and the east run 9.5 hours behind India during their daylight-saving summer (10.5 in winter); Vancouver and the west coast are 12.5 hours behind (13.5 in winter). The overnight westbound flight lands the same calendar day.

Is vegetarian food easy to find in Canada?

Very easy. Toronto and Vancouver have huge Indian communities and excellent vegetarian and vegan restaurants - from Udupi dosas on Toronto's Gerrard Street to Govinda's buffets - and mainstream restaurants mark vegetarian and vegan dishes clearly. Halal and Jain-friendly options are widely available in the big cities.

Do Indian chargers work in Canada?

Canada uses 120 volts at 60 Hz with flat-pin North American plugs (types A and B). Most Indian phone and laptop chargers are rated 100-240V, so they work fine with a simple plug adapter - check the label on the charger before plugging in anything bigger, like a hair dryer.
