Thailand events guide for Indian families: Songkran, Loy Krathong and the Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Written by The Trip Keeper Team Content updated 24 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 24 Oct 2026
The short answer

Three events can shape a Thailand trip with parents: Songkran, the Thai New Year in mid April, Loy Krathong, the festival of floating lights in November, and the Phuket Vegetarian Festival in October. For most parents Loy Krathong is the gentlest. Songkran is joyful, but wet and busy. Pick one and build the trip around it.

April

Songkran

Nationwide: Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai and more Dates not announced yet

Usually mid April; 2026 Bangkok events ran 9-15 Apr per TAT. 2027 dates not announced yet. 2027 dates not yet announced.

Thailand's New Year, recognised by UNESCO. Traditionally it means merit-making, water-pouring rituals for elders and temple visits. It has also grown into big water festivals: in Bangkok, Silom and Siam Square become water zones, while Ayutthaya holds an elephant water-splashing event and the north has longer ceremonies.

For families: The traditional water-pouring for elders is gentle. The big Bangkok party zones are soaking and crowded. For parents, choose temple and cultural events or a quieter city, keep phones and medicines in waterproof pouches, and book early.

October

A Thai-Chinese festival of merit-making and rituals at more than 40 Chinese shrines across Phuket. It is expected to draw more than 140,000 visitors.

For families: Hotel demand in Phuket's Mueang district rises sharply, so book early. Streets are crowded during processions, so pick a fixed viewing spot and keep a rest in the day. If anyone has dietary needs, check ingredients at each stall. We cannot guarantee that any dish suits a medical diet.

For families: It is an evening event with a heritage setting, so it suits a slow pace. Keep a rest in the afternoon, choose a hotel near the venue and check local dates, because each town runs its own programme.
