The short answer

You do not need fluent Japanese, but a handful of phrases changes the trip. Learn sumimasen (excuse me) and arigatou (thank you) first, and vegetarian families should keep the meat-and-fish sentence from our food guide ready on a phone.

Trips to Japan

Quick questions

Do I need to speak Japanese to travel in Japan?

No, but a few phrases help every day. These greetings and questions come from JNTO's basic list for travelers, and JNTO also publishes a point-and-speak language handbook you can carry.

What is the one phrase to learn first?

Sumimasen. It works for getting someone's attention, saying excuse me and a light apology, so it comes up many times a day.

How do I say I cannot eat meat or fish?

Niku to sakana ga taberaremasen. Our Japan food guide calls this the one sentence every vegetarian needs, because fish stock appears in many dishes that look meat-free. It covers meat and fish only. For allergies, use the I-am-allergic sentence in this same group, and strict Jain food needs more planning than a single phrase.

How do I ask the price of something?

Ikura desuka means how much is it. Point at the item and ask; staff are used to the question from visitors.

How do I ask where something is?

Doko desuka means where is it. Say the place first, then doko desuka, for example the station name followed by doko desuka.

Is there a phrasebook I can carry?

Yes. JNTO publishes a Tourist's Language Handbook, an English-Japanese point-and-speak booklet, which is linked in our sources.
