Nepali phrases for your Nepal trip

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Here is the good news first: Nepali is written in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, so you can sound out every menu and signboard, and Hindi is widely understood thanks to Indian films and TV. English works in hotels and tourist areas. Even so, Nepalis light up at a namaste and dhanyabad in their own tongue - and the phrases below carry you through momo stalls, taxi bargaining and temple mornings.

The five phrases that matter most

नमस्ते
namaste
Hello (also namaste at any hour)
नमस्ते
धन्यवाद
dhanyabad
Thank you
धन्यवाद
तपाईं अंग्रेजी बोल्नुहुन्छ?

Do you speak English?

I do not eat meat

Quick questions

Do I need Nepali for a Nepal trip?

Not for survival: English works in hotels, restaurants and tourist areas, and Hindi is widely understood - most Nepalis follow Indian films, TV and music. But namaste and dhanyabad in Nepali noticeably warm every interaction, and outside the cities Nepali is the working language.

Can Indians read Nepali?

Yes - this is Nepal's gift to Indian travellers. Nepali uses Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, so menus, signboards, bus destinations and prices are readable by sounding them out. Many words overlap with Hindi too: paani (water), din (day), kam (less).

How different is Nepali from Hindi?

Close cousins, not identical. Both descend from Sanskrit, so vocabulary overlaps heavily, but grammar and pronunciation differ - dhanyabad (thank you), bhat (rice), chiya (tea) are quick wins, while whole sentences take practice. Hindi speakers are understood more easily than they understand rapid Nepali; English bridges the gap.

Which five phrases should I learn first?

Namaste (hello), dhanyabad (thank you), tapai angreji bolnuhunchha? (do you speak English?), ma maasu khaandina (I do not eat meat), and yasko kati parchha? (how much is this?). These five are starred above.

What other languages will we hear in Nepal?

In the Kathmandu Valley you will hear Newari (Nepal Bhasa); in the mountains, Sherpa, Tamang and Tibetan-related languages; in the Terai, Maithili and Bhojpuri, which border-region Indians will find familiar. Nepali is the link language everywhere.
