British English phrases for your UK trip

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Britain speaks English, so nothing here is a language barrier - the fun is the vocabulary. British English has its own words for everyday things: chips are fries, crisps are chips, the loo is the toilet, a quid is a pound, and "cheers" means thank you as often as it means a toast. Learn the twenty-odd words and phrases below and menus, tickets and small talk will all make instant sense.

Quick questions

Do Indians need to learn any language for the UK?

No new language - Britain speaks English, and Indian English and British English are mutually understood. What helps is knowing local usage: cheers means thank you, the bill (not the check), chips means fries, and a quid is a pound. The phrases above cover the differences that actually come up on a trip.

How different is British English from Indian English?

The grammar is the same; the everyday words differ. Indians say "toilet" or "washroom", Britons say "loo"; Indians say "check" at a restaurant, Britons say "bill"; Indian "chips" (packet) are British "crisps", and Indian "french fries" are British "chips". Ticket counters sell a "return" (round trip) and a "single" (one way).

What does "cheers" mean in Britain?

Most often it is a casual thank you - hand someone change, hold a door, and you will hear "cheers". It is also used at the pub when raising a glass, and sometimes as a friendly goodbye. Context makes it obvious.

What is a quid, a fiver and a tenner?

Slang for money: a quid is one pound sterling (and it has no plural - twenty pounds is "twenty quid"), a fiver is a five-pound note, and a tenner is a ten-pound note.

What does "mind the gap" mean?

The famous London Underground warning to watch the space between the train and the platform when stepping on and off. You will hear it announced at Tube stations and see it painted on platform edges.
