April to June is when Almaty turns green: the apple city blossoms, the mountains hold their snow as a backdrop, and cafe tables spill onto the pavements. The trade-off is rain - these are Almaty's three wettest months - plus a burst of local holiday crowds in early May. Temperatures below are the official 1991-2020 normals from the Almaty weather station via the Japan Meteorological Agency's ClimatView.
April: blossom and umbrellas
April averages 12.1C - pleasant jacket weather, with afternoons often touching 17-18C - but it is also Almaty's wettest month at 108.8mm. The rain comes in bursts rather than all-day drizzles, and between showers the city's famous aport apple blossoms and tulips peak. For Indian travellers used to April heat, this feels like a gift. Pack a compact umbrella and waterproof shoes; plan museums and the Green Bazaar as rainy-hour fillers.
May: the sweet spot with a holiday rush
May is the month's best balance: average 17.1C, rain easing to 98.8mm, parks in full leaf, and outdoor cafes open. Two cautions. First, Kazakhstan clusters public holidays on 1, 7 and 9 May, and locals crowd Shymbulak, Medeu and the city parks on those weekends - book hotels for early May weeks ahead. Second, spring skiing at Shymbulak winds down through April, and the lifts take maintenance breaks in the shoulder season - check shymbulak.com if the gondola is a must-do, since a late-April or May visit can land in a closure window.
June: early summer, hiking season opens
June averages 22.1C with rain down to 59.8mm - warm days around 26-27C, cool evenings near 15C. The high trails open, day trips to Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai lakes run at full schedule, and daylight stretches past 21:00. It is also when regional tourists begin arriving, so weekends at the big sights get busier, though nothing like CNY-level crowds. Book canyon day trips a few days ahead and keep one city day loose for a rain shower.
What to book first
In order: hotels for the 1-9 May holiday window (locals book early), then the Shymbulak gondola days around its maintenance schedule (return KZT 12,000 - see our 3-day Almaty itinerary), then June canyon day trips. Flights from Delhi are direct daily - the flights guide has schedules - and fares stay reasonable in spring, so the hotel is the real race.
